I encourage Monkey all I can to enjoy books, mind you he needs no coaxing, he loves books. He is a member at our local library and loves going there and browsing to see what catches his eye. He also has a library day at Pre-School so he is a proper little bookworm.
There are some fab children’s books out there now and they play a big part in a child’s education, so I thought I would put together a small list of our children’s storybooks top picks.
1. Bumpus Jumpus Dinosaurumpus
Monkey is dinosaur mad! so this is just so apt for him. Shake, shake, shudder, near the sludgy old swamp. The dinosaurs are coming. Get ready to romp! This is a fun book with rhymes and descriptions of all types of dinosaurs joining in with the dinosaur dance. A MUST for all Dinosaur fans.
2. Mr Men
Any Mr Men book is a hit for Monkey. I used to love these myself as a child. True classics, by Roger Hargreaves.
3. Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends – Trouble For Thomas
Monkey has most of this series. Easy to follow, short stories of the famous steam train Thomas and his friends. Thomas’ snowplough causes him nothing but trouble. Despite this, he and Toby still get the Christmas tree to the village on time. Created by Britt Allcroft. Based on the railway series by Reverend W Awdry.
4.Splish,Splash,Splat!
Splat does not want to learn how to swim, water is horrible, scary, and wet! But he and his friend eventually find out just how fun it is! Simple little read, great for little ones who are a little apprehensive of bathtime/swimming. By Rob Scotton
5. There’s A Shark In The bath
When a family of sharks pop out the plughole, Dulcie must figure out a way to keep them from eating her up! A fun story with bright illustrations. By Sarah McIntyre.
6. The Dinosaur That Pooped A Planet!
Danny and dinosaur are back, and this time they are going to space. But when Danny realises he’s forgotten Dino’s lunch box, the very hungry dinosaur eats everything in sight, including their only way home: The rocket! How will Dino get them back home? By Tom Fletcher Dougie Pointer & Garry Parsons.
7. How To Catch A Star
A beautifully illustrated book with a nice storyline that keeps monkey involved. I reviewed this book here – How to Catch a Star Review
Once there was a boy, and that boy loved stars very much. So much so that he decided to catch one of his very own. But how? by Oliver Jeffers.
8. Do Not Enter The Monster Zoo
Another thumbs up from Monkey. A fun read with lots of monster characters.
The little boy in leaps at the chance to be a zookeeper at this very different kind of zoo, and although the monsters seem scary, he soon has them eating out of the palm of his hand. By Amy Sparkes & Sara Ogilvie.
9. Giraffes Can’t Dance
Gerald the giraffe longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny and his neck is too long.
But with some sound advice from a wise cricket, Gerald starts swaying to his own sweet tune. A colourful, fun rhyming story by Giles Andreae & Guy Parker-Rees.
10. The Giants Loo Roll
A rhyming story with humour that guarantees giggles!
Following a giant’s toilet roll as it goes on a crazy journey through town, leaving havoc in its wake. What will the towns folk do with all the enormous sheets of paper? They could build a paper plane, or make 100’s of pairs of pants. But will there be any paper left for the giant in his time of need? By Nicholas Allan.

We have several of these on our bookcase but I’ve never heard of The Giants Loo Roll – I had to google it to find out more! I really want to read it now!
