When the kit arrived it was nice to see that there was minimal waste where the packaging is concerned.
The telescope parts are all on precut sheets ready to just press out as you need them. There is an instructions guide included which is super easy to follow.
Jayden set about making his telescope step by step. I did have my reservations that this might be quite flimsy and awkward to put together, but it is quite the opposite. The pieces of card are surprisingly sturdy and fit together with ease. Absolutely no glue is needed making it a mess-free activity.
The lovely thing about these kits is that Jayden and I were able to work together as a team to build our telescope. They are a fab way to spend some quality time together building something epic! And while kids have fun building their kits they are learning essential STEAM skills too.
Once built our telescope had some great features.
- It has a real glass optic lens with 16 magnification
- You can slide the focus tube back and forth
- An Angle finder
- Built-in spotting sight
- Safety lens caps
From start to finish, our telescope took us around an hour to build. We have had a little go using it outside, and ok, you are not going to see the milky way close up! However, you wouldn’t buy this kit if you wanted a serious telescope. Jayden learnt about the way lenses can be used for magnification and focusing as well as giving him a lovely activity for an afternoon.
Thankfully there is so much awareness now about how plastics are terrible for the environment and how we should all be making a conscious effort to reduce our carbon footprint. These kits are amazing in that respect because the majority of the parts are made from sustainable cardboard. When you are finished with this model, it can simply be taken apart and placed in your recycling!
