Storytelling Fun With Dixit

We love being part of the Asmodee Blogger Board Game Club. We are extremely lucky to get to review loads of fun board games. Recently we reviewed SET, Carcassonne and Who did it?.

This week we have been reviewing Dixit.

This is a card based game for between three and six players. In the box is 84 illustrated story cards, Six different colour player markers and a corresponding set of voting cards numbered one to six. The box has a built-in scoreboard and storage for the other pieces.

Each player starts the game with a score marker and the set of voting cards. You are all then dealt six story cards which you hide away from the other players. The player who is starting chooses one of the story cards in their hand. They then tell the group a story with a short sentence, using the picture on the card as inspiration. The rest of the players listen to the story being told. They then look at their own cards and try to pick a card that is similar to the story and pass that card to the storyteller. The storyteller shuffles their card and the cards given in by the other players and then places them all face up in the middle of the group.

You all then look at the cards and try to decide which card was the one that the storyteller was using. You use your voting cards to indicate your choice, however, you cannot vote for your own card.

If everybody guesses the correct card, the storyteller gets 0 points and everyone else gets 2. The same if nobody gets the right answer. When someone gets the right answer both that player and the storyteller get 3 points. For every vote that you get for your card that you have given to the storyteller, you also get one bonus point. The aim of the game is for the storyteller to give out some clues to their card so as some players can correctly guess which one it is, but not give out too much so that everyone correctly guesses.

The cards are beautifully illustrated with lots of amazing detail.

At the end of the round you mark your scores on the scoreboard, take all of the face-up cards and return them to the box and replenish your hand with one card from the deck. You each take it in turns to be the storyteller. The game ends when the deck of cards has been used up and the winner is the player with the most points. If at any point in the game one player scores 30 or more points, they are automatically the winner and the game ends.

This game is much easier to play than it seems and is great fun for all of the family. The game makes everyone use their imaginations and encourages creativity. Perfect for playing on a rainy day!
