We are so happy to be on board with the Asmodee Blogger Board Game Club again this year. We’ve had some lovely games to share so far, such as Who Did It? Ticket To Ride Europe and we have even more fun games to share in the next few months.

Carcassonne is a fun kingdom building game for 2-5 players. You each choose a colour and take all of the meeples in that colour. You place one meeple on the scoreboard as a counter and the rest you keep for use during the game. You begin with the start tile placed on the playing surface and the remaining tiles are then stored face down in two piles. Each player takes a turn to take a tile from the pile. The tile may feature fields, a road, a city and monasteries.

You place the tile down onto your playing surface in an appropriate position to expand the world of Carcassonne. Roads must continue, cities must be built completely and monasteries must be surrounded by tiles. After you have placed your tile, you may place a meeple on the board to claim one of the landmarks being built (road, city or monastery). You then tally up your score for this turn and record it on the scoreboard.

Scoring is easy. If you have a meeple on a road that is completed (runs from one place to another) you score one point for each of the tiles that make up part of that road.

If you have a meeple in a city when the city is surrounded by walls, you get two points for each tile that makes up part of the city, you also get a bonus two points for each tile with a coat of arms on it.

If you have a meeple in a monastery, you score when the monastery is surrounded by fields. You then score one point per tile (nine) for the monastery and the eight tiles surrounding it.

If there is an opponents meeple on the same landmark, you both score full points, If you have more meeples on a landmark than your opponent, you receive full points and your opponent scores zero.

When all of the tiles have been placed down, you have a final tally up of points on the unfinished landmarks with meeples placed upon them. Roads are worth one point per tile, cities are worth one point per tile and monasteries are worth one point per tile. The winner is the one who has scored most points at the end of the game.

We enjoyed playing Carcassonne. The game is just about the right length of time to keep kids interested and the rules are pretty easy to follow.
