National Geographic Build Your Own Volcano Kit

We do a lot of STEM activities in our homeschooling sessions. Also, being Bandai Ambassadors we have some cool STEM kits to incorporate into our learning too. We recently reviewed the National Geographic Crystal Lab and Sea Monkeys kits which were awesome.
This week we have been trying out the National Geographic Build Your Own Volcano Kit.
 

National Geographic Build Your Own Volcano Kit Age 8+

What you get in the kit

• Plaster of Paris
• Citric acid
• Eruption powder (sodium bicarbonate)
• Paints
• Plastic mould
• Wooden stick
• Volcanic rock samples
• Learning guide
• Instructions

First, we mixed the Plaster of Paris powder with the required amount of water.  You may want to pop some newspaper down to catch the mess if you are doing this in the house. Once we filled our mould, we gave it a little shake to get out any air bubbles and left it to dry next to our stove. You can use the oven or leave it to dry over a couple of days.

Once our volcano was set, Jayden painted it with the colourful red, oranges and yellow paints that came with the kit.

We took the volcano outside to do the experiment. We mixed our powders and popped them on to the top of our volcano. Jayden then added some water and we watched as it fizzed up and erupted! You can also use the included learning guide alongside the experiment to discover facts about volcanos, how obsidian is formed and to learn about the general structure of the earth. We have covered volcanos a few times now in our homeschooling but this kit was a nice little refresher of what we have already learned.

Yet again, we are really impressed with the National Geographic STEM kits. They are interesting, practical and most importantly, make learning fun!
