Your home is more than just your castle, it’s an investment. And no matter how long you intend to stay in that home, it’s in your best interests to ensure that you get the maximum possible return on that investment when the time eventually does come to sell it. Kitchen and bathroom renovations are a great way to do this as is the addition of a conservatory. However, if you’re looking to combine an investment that adds value to your home with an investment that gives you arguably the most usable and versatile space, you can’t do much better than a loft conversion.
With the potential to add up to 20% extra to the value of your home, it’s a great investment albeit one that comes with some pretty significant expense. There are many reputable companies out there such as Live in Lofts, just make sure to do your research before jumping straight in.
Still, after paying all that money, you’ll want to enjoy every moment you spend in your newly converted loft. And that starts with how you decorate it. Whether you choose to use the space as an additional bedroom, an office, or a room in which you can relax in solitude your decor will give it a sense of personality while also improving its functionality.
Here are some tips for decorating yours…
Maximise natural light
One of the great things about loft conversion is those lovely big windows that flood the space with natural light. And because the light comes from above it’s less likely to be blocked by trees or other houses. As such, you should make sure that you take steps to maximise natural light. Invest in blinds that will give you privacy when you need it but won’t block out the light. Avoid putting items of furniture in space that’s too close to or blocking windows.
The light from the windows is what will make the space look, well, spacious.
Build in low-level storage
The last thing you want to do is make your converted loft look and feel cluttered. However, traditional shelves and bookcases may not be fit for purpose given the inward sloping walls. Many find that using low-level storage solutions is a great way to deal with the awkward space between the floor and the point at which the walls start to slope.
Low chairs and desks can also be great additions to lofts and help you to maximise your use of available floor space.
Create a tranquil space with neutral colours
And finally, your loft space with its abundance of natural light and visibility of the sky makes it naturally conducive to relaxation, which is one of the reasons why many choose to use it as a spare room. Nonetheless, it can work just as well as an office, gym or meditation space. The trick is to use a neutral colour palette which will add to the sense of serenity. Where possible try to use natural materials like wood, cotton and stone. These will tie in with the sense of calm and tranquillity which is already inherent in a loft conversion.
