How You Can Use Purlins in Your Home Improvements

Purlins are horizontal pieces of steel or timber that can be used in architecture, building and roof construction. Supported by either the walls or the rafters of the building, they are essential to ensuring that the structure of the building is kept solid. What are the differences in the materials?

In wood construction, a wood purlin will be used alongside fibre cement sheeting. This will ensure that anything that is kept within the room will be safely stored away from the elements. When you are constructing your home’s structure out of timber, three types of purlin is typically used: the principal purlin, the purlin plate and the common purlin.

In steel construction, a purlin will be placed parallel to the building eave and will support the roof decking. It is most commonly used to construct larger, metal buildings.

Types of Purlins

There are three common types of purlins that are available on the market:

RHS purlins – which are used in roof construction. Rectangular, hollow tubes with welded tubes they are inserted once the support structure is up, they can be visibly seen and are more about the purpose rather than their appearance.

C Purlins – square in shape, C purlins are used within the rafters, walls, floor joists and wall studs.

Z purlins – perhaps the strongest and more rigid type of purlin, they resemble the letter Z and are used in large-scale construction, such as building a metal building or large agricultural building.

Using purlins to construct a tiny house

With the popularity of the tiny house movement, many are turning to tiny houses for a new way of life. Leaving many of their belongings behind, they are downsizing in order to lead a less materialistic life. When constructing a tiny house, you can use a timber frame with girts, plats and purlins to tie the rafters and posts together. This alongside diagonal knee braces will make the structure rigid.
