Preparing your car for Winter. Winter tyres

I don’t know about you but we are always out and about in the car. Whether it’s to take the kids to their classes and groups or to go into town, we do clock up those miles. With the weather rapidly declining, we will start to get the X5 prepped for the Winter roads. Although my husband is a mechanic by trade, I like to think that I can maintain the car safety checks myself. After all, we both use the car so it makes sense that we both keep an eye out for any issues. Here are some of the to-do’s on my car maintenance check list come Winter time.

Antifreeze

One of the most obvious to-do’s over Winter but imperative all the same. The engines water will soon freeze up with a good frost and there will plenty of those coming our way over the next few months.

Winter Tyres

It’s natural to assume that because your tyres are fairly new and the tread is good, that they will be fine to use throughout Winter. However, Winter tyres offer much more grip in colder temperatures and they hold the road better in wetter conditions. Use a reputable company such as Point S. Point S has cheap tyres online and offers local fitting in many areas. Simply fill out the easy online form with your registration number, tyre size, width etc and you will receive a whole list of tyres to reserve. You pay for your tyres at the fitting service you opt for.

Check Screen Wash

Make sure your screen wash tank is full. With wet roads comes dirty spray and excess salt so you will be using your wipers more often. Screen wash will not freeze as quick as water in colder conditions, so well worth investing in.

Check oil

This goes without saying and should be checked regularly whatever the season.

Prepare for the worst

There’s nothing worse than a breakdown and they always seem to happen when you least expect it. And it’s bound to happen on the coldest day ever and your freezing your god knows what off waiting for the recovery truck to come and save you! So why not make an emergency box and pack it away in the boot? Pop a fleece blanket in there to wrap up warm (very handy if you have little ones in tow). A shovel would be another saviour if you are expecting snow. De-icer and a scraper for early morning set-offs. Lastly, if you are heading off on a long journey why not take a flask of tea and some food. You never know when you might need it!

  1. I really need to invest in some winter tyres as I skid a few year back and I now hate driving in snow and icy conditions x
