Dating burnout

I’ll be honest, I’m not in the dating scene. I’m happily married and haven’t had to navigate a dating app in my life (thank goodness). But even from the sidelines, it’s pretty clear that dating these days looks… exhausting.

I see friends talking about it all the time. The endless swiping, dry conversations, people who ghost mid-chat or disappear after one date. It sounds more like a part-time job than something romantic. And more and more, I’m hearing the same phrase pop up – dating burnout.

It’s not you – it’s just a lot

From what I gather (as a slightly smug outsider), dating burnout creeps in when it all starts to feel more stressful than fun. You’re putting yourself out there, trying to be open, hopeful, normal… and half the time you’re met with confusion, bad communication or just weird vibes.

Even people who want something meaningful get caught in this loop of bad timing, vague intentions, or conversations that go nowhere. And the thing is, it’s not about being dramatic. It’s just that the emotional effort starts to outweigh the reward.

So what are people doing about it?

The good news is, more and more people are stepping away from the fluff and looking for dating advice that actually feels useful not patronising, not preachy and definitely not just “think positive and it’ll happen”.

There are some great dating resources out there that talk about dating in a real, grounded way, with a bit of honesty, a dash of humour, and plenty of encouragement. Hopefully, these will help you to navigate the ups and downs of modern dating safely.
