Respect is looking up to someone when they have done something outstanding or have gone out of their way to show their incredible abilities. It’s also a level of understanding where a person gives care and support to another person, be it someone they know closely or not. It goes much further than knowing your manners and for children, they will learn about these as they grow older from their parents.
From an independent nursery in Birmingham, we take a look at the ways to raise and show respect in the home with your child.
Remain calm, but stay in control
Avoid speaking to your child when they’re not in your direct view – make sure you have your full attention on your child with direct eye contact to ensure that they also have their full attention on you. Remain in control when your child does something that you don’t like and explain why what they did was wrong, calmly.
Identify what causes your child to be disrespectful
As a child, we can be rude when we don’t mean to be, but identifying when those times are is key to development. Ask your child why they’re acting a certain way, what causes them to think that way and what could have set it off. Ask lots of open questions during these talks so that your child has the child to think for themselves, and see what they do to change their ways.
Model respect in the home
The most common way of viewing this is by letting your child have their own interests and to pursue things they want to do on their own. Being shaped by parents’ decisions can mean your child doesn’t have many chances to be independent and to use their critical thinking and decision-making skills. Let them make their own choices and they will soon learn about the level of respect you give them in letting them be who they want to be.
