Teaching your children about religion is a thorny issue for some people. In households where the parents are religious, there is a tendency to raise children in the same belief system.
But whether you and your children are religious, or whether you practice your faith, there are numerous reasons to teach children about religion. Here are some simple ways that you can make religion an open and interesting topic for your children, whether they are learning about their own faith or other people’s.
Every Religion Has Value
Every world religion has value, whether you agree with its teachings or not. It’s important to remember that every religion has the potential to be corrupted and misused by extremists. There are fundamentalists in every faith; their views rarely align with the mainstream of their group.
When teaching children about religion, you should aim to teach that they are all equal. If your family follows a particular religion, you can emphasise this fact to them. But you shouldn’t teach that followers of one religion are “better” than followers of religion.
Every religion has value and can help people lead better lives.
Science Vs Religion
Far too often, we cast science and religion as mortal enemies. While there may be some vocal people on both sides who insist that this is the case, it doesn’t have to be this way. Children can learn about religion without forming a negative view of science.
The scientific method ensures that we can make new discoveries and verify them as objective truths. For any religion to be true, it has to be compatible with everything else that we know to be true.
A good example of this is evolution. We know beyond a reasonable doubt that the theory of natural selection is correct. You can still believe that natural selection is a deliberate design choice by an all-knowing deity. But to insist that it doesn’t exist means denying reality.
Look for Kid-Focused Content
There is now a big market for religious content aimed at children. You will find plenty of great resources online, but this is just one medium that children can learn through.
Children can learn all about different cultures from television channels that provide a diverse line-up of TV shows, including cooking shows, business shows, documentaries, and other lifestyle and current affairs programming.
A Personal Journey
Religion is a very personal thing. It is up to each individual person to find meaning in life and to find the most satisfactory answers they can to the big questions about why we are here and what we should do with our lives.
Instead of teaching religion as a strict adherence to the rules laid out in religious texts, make sure your children understand that it is ultimately up to them to interpret those words. You don’t have to take religious texts literally to find worthwhile messages in them.
Teaching children about religion doesn’t have to be a dry or dull undertaking. With the right approach, you can make this a stimulating subject for kids to study. Without a well-rounded religious education, children’s views of other faiths and cultures can easily become distorted by other people with their own agendas. Equipping your kids with the knowledge they need to make their own assessments about faith and religion will serve them better in the long run.
