Scotland has always been on our ’must visit’ list. With stunning landscapes, historic towns and so much to explore and discover! After a few years of uncertainty and wanting to stay safe, travel has been put on the backburner for us. Now that things look more positive albeit still wearing masks where we see fit, we can get on with planning our dream family getaway to the Scottish Highlands.

Here are just a few reasons why we can’t wait to visit Scotland and why you should consider it too!

North Coast 500

I think this is a popular choice for people wanting to explore Scotland. The North Coast 500 has 516 miles of beautiful coastal scenery, mountains, picturesque villages and so much more.
I know quite a few people who have done this route and they say that it is absolutely breathtaking.

I think the biggest appeal of the NC500 is that you get to experience a lot of different parts of Scotland and you have the ability to change your itinerary as you see fit. If you find a place that you really want to explore further, then you can. It is also very easy to add particular things that are more appealing to you.

Visit Scottish Gardens

If you pop over here often, you will know that I love gardening and really enjoy getting inspiration from visiting public gardens.
Discover Scottish Gardens have over 400 gardens, woodlands and plant nurseries for all of the family to enjoy. We are quite an outdoors-loving bunch and always make use of our National Trust memberships so we will really look forward to exploring some of the sites when we go.
Discover Scottish Gardens have a useful feature on their website where you can search for day trips to Scottish gardens and facilities. It’s a great way to plan your itinerary prior to visiting.

Inverewe Garden is one of the many places we want to see. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, this lush, tropical oasis is perched on a peninsula on the shores of Loch Ewe, amid the rugged landscape of Wester Ross.
There is so much to see there such as the 400 varieties of rhododendrons, rose gardens, the beautiful walled garden, woodlands, the peace garden which has fantastic willow figures depicting the commemoration of the end of WW1 and Scotland’s big 5 which are squirrels, otters, red deer, golden eagles and harbour seals! So there really is something for the whole family to see, which is the case with all of the lovely Scottish Gardens locations making the Highlands, North East of Scotland and Scottish borders the perfect locations for a family holiday or short break.

History

Scotland is a place that is steeped in national history. From its battle for independence and years of conflict with the English crown to the early Viking settlements and inter-clan battles. Scattered around Scotland is a whole array of historic buildings, castles and battlements. Possibly the most famous is Edinburgh Castle. Perched on top of an inactive volcano, it houses the crown jewels and at 1 pm every day there is a gun salute. Perhaps one of the most stunning castles though is Dunnottar. Sitting on a craggy outcrop of rock overlooking the North sea near Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. Definitely one to visit if only for the photographs.

Food And Drink

One of the best things to look forward to when visiting somewhere new is to try out the local food and drink.
With freshly caught seafood, neeps, tatties and haggis and a traditional bowl of good old Scottish porridge! There are so many wonderful dishes to try.
Not forgetting over 130 whisky distilleries that are spread across Scotland. So if you like a wee dram, there are lots of guided tours where you can enjoy a bit of whisky tasting.

  8. I loved Scotland all my life. And then a couple of years ago, I did a good chunk of the North Coast 500 and then I was IN love. It’s like nothing else I’ve ever seen, a unique route with unique scenery.

  28. I love Scotland. We stayed in North Berwick several years ago. It’s a beautiful town on the coast and a really easy train ride into Edinburgh :o)

  65. My husband has never been to Scotland and it’s always been his wish to visit there. I personally love Scotland. I love the backdrop of mountains that you just don’t get in London. I love the history to it like you mentioned but also it’s food, all very comforting and homely.
