A Pest for All Seasons! What To Look Out for All-Year-Round

The home is, unfortunately, home to a number of pests, and it is important to understand which pests your property is likely to be invaded by. Not all of these pests are around at every time of the year. Let’s show you the times of the year when you would expect certain pests, and what you can do about them. 

Winter 

Mice and rats are the big culprits during these months because of the cold weather. But you may be surprised to find cockroaches at this time of year, although this is because of the central heating system’s warmth being very attractive to them! From November until January, the most common insects are spiders. As rats and mice head indoors to nest or hibernate, we start to see an influx of these. The month of December is usually the best month to get respite from pests. Clothes moths disappear, and spider levels start to drop. This is the perfect time for you to prepare your home for any infestations by addressing the biggest problem areas in your home. Look at the attic, and check for any issues with your walls.

Spring

When March comes around, you will encounter a number of clothes moths and the first signs of ants. Additionally, you will see nesting birds. By the time April and May come around, you will find more cockroaches, and potentially termites. While termites are particularly rare in certain areas, it is still important to be aware that there could be colonies around your home, coming from the soil. However, termites can easily be removed. Many specialists use Termidor chemical treatments which is one of the most effective ways to kill a huge infestation of termites. During April and May, you may also start to notice a few house flies and the first appearances of wasps. If you see any wasp nests, it is important to deal with them before the swarms become fully active. 

Summer

When the summer begins, the clothes moths will begin to die down, but this is when the levels of fleas, house flies, and bed bugs all increase. July is the main time for bees and wasps. So make sure that you are cleaning up your food and rubbish promptly. August is when the house flies begin to die off, but there are still major concerns, including those wasps and ants. 

Autumn 

As the summer draws to a close, you could find high levels of wasps during September, but this is also the beginning of spider season. When you go into October, you might be surprised to see a few wasps surviving, which is normal. You could also see an influx of birds, rats, and mice as they are looking for warmer environments.

Pests can be a problem all year round, but the most important thing for you to remember is to be vigilant. If you are looking to renovate your home or make changes, you have to be aware of the attraction your home poses to pests.
