Children’s toys can quickly take over any living space, leaving rooms cluttered and chaotic. Finding the perfect balance between playtime and organisation can be a challenge, but with the right toy storage solutions, you can keep your home neat while encouraging creativity and fun. Here are some innovative ways to store toys, ensuring that every space, from the smallest flat to the largest house, can remain stylish and organised.
1. Utilise Vertical Space with Wall-Mounted Storage
When floor space is limited, the walls can become your best friend. Wall-mounted storage solutions are perfect for keeping toys off the ground while still accessible to little ones. Consider using shelves, pegboards, or hanging baskets. Shelves can display toys in a decorative manner, while pegboards allow for flexible organisation. Hanging baskets add a playful touch to the room and can hold anything from plush toys to art supplies.
Top Tip: Arrange toys at varying heights to create an eye-catching display while keeping the most-used toys within easy reach.
2. Multi-Functional Furniture for Hidden Storage
Furniture that doubles as storage is a game-changer for any home, especially in smaller spaces. Ottomans with hidden compartments, benches with built-in cubbies, or beds with drawers underneath offer excellent ways to store toys without taking up extra room. These solutions allow you to keep the living space clutter-free while maintaining a stylish and functional environment.
Best Use: Multi-functional furniture is perfect for living rooms or bedrooms where you want to avoid the look of traditional toy boxes.
3. Toy Bins and Baskets for Easy Access
Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. Toy bins and baskets are timeless, versatile storage options that can fit into any room. Baskets come in various styles and materials, such as wicker, fabric, or metal, making them easy to match with your existing decor. For a more personal touch, label the bins with pictures or words to help children know where their toys belong.
Quick Tip: Opt for lightweight bins so your kids can easily carry them when it’s time to tidy up.
4. Under-Bed Storage to Maximise Space
The space under the bed is often underutilised, but it offers a perfect hiding spot for toys. Under-bed storage boxes or rolling bins provide easy access to toys while keeping them out of sight. This storage solution is particularly useful in shared bedrooms or small homes where every inch of space counts.
Organisational Tip: Use transparent boxes so children can see what’s inside, or label the boxes for quick identification.
5. Custom-Made Shelving Units
If you want a more permanent solution to toy storage, custom-made shelving units are ideal. Tailored to fit the specific dimensions of your space, custom shelves provide a dedicated spot for every toy, puzzle, and book. You can choose to have open shelves to display toys or closed cupboards for a more streamlined look.
For a more cost-effective alternative, consider using furniture board to create your own DIY shelving units. Furniture board is durable and comes in various finishes, making it easy to match the aesthetic of your room. You can build simple shelves or complex storage systems that meet your family’s needs.
Design Idea: Mix open and closed storage options for a balanced look—open shelves for display-worthy toys and closed units for quick, clutter-free storage.

6. Toy Chests with a Twist
Toy chests are a classic storage option, but you can get creative with modern designs. Look for toy chests that offer built-in seating or those that come with wheels for easy mobility. If you’re feeling crafty, you can upcycle an old piece of furniture into a unique toy chest by painting it in fun colours and adding playful hardware.
Pro Tip: Ensure the chest has a soft-close lid to prevent little fingers from getting caught.
7. Create a Rotating Toy System
One of the best ways to manage toy clutter is by rotating toys. Instead of leaving all the toys out at once, keep some in storage and switch them out every few weeks. This method not only keeps your home tidier, but it also makes playtime more exciting for your children, as they rediscover forgotten toys.
To implement this system, use storage bins or boxes to categorise toys. Label each box by theme or type, and store them in a closet, attic, or under the bed. Rotate the boxes regularly to keep things fresh.
Organisational Tip: Introduce a “one toy in, one toy out” rule to maintain a manageable collection of toys.
8. Incorporate Toy Storage into Play Areas
Designate specific zones in your home for different activities and incorporate toy storage directly into those areas. For example, create an arts and crafts station with built-in cubbies for supplies or set up a reading nook with bookcases for storybooks and soft toys. By giving each activity its own dedicated space, you can keep toys organised and minimise mess.
Bonus Tip: Make clean-up part of playtime by turning it into a fun game for your children.
9. Clear Toy Storage for Quick Clean-Up
Clear plastic bins are a fantastic way to store toys while keeping everything visible and accessible. These bins are especially useful for storing smaller toys like building blocks, action figures, or art supplies. By using clear storage, you reduce the time spent searching for specific toys, which can be a lifesaver when tidying up in a hurry.
Storage Hack: Stackable clear bins maximise space in cupboards or closets, keeping toys neatly tucked away.
Conclusion
With a little creativity, toy storage can become a stylish and functional element of your home. Whether you’re working with a large playroom or a compact flat, there’s a solution that fits your needs. From vertical storage to multi-functional furniture and custom shelving made from furniture board, the key is to make the most of your space while keeping toys organised and accessible. By implementing some of these ideas, you can enjoy a tidy, toy-friendly home where both children and adults can thrive.
Great ideas. My daughter has a very weird shaped room which is in the roof so the ceiling is slanted too so under bed storage and toy bins are a must in there. I could do with a few of the stackable bins in there though.
Thanks for these tips/ideas
We used cubed storage shelves to store all our toys, and I took photos of the toys to stick in the empty cubes so that knew where each toy needed to be returned to!
Lots of good ideas for an issue most of us face. I particularly like the idea of rotating accessible toys.
