Here we are again with another little insight into our home schooling journey. It only seems like yesterday that I was sharing our last monthly update! June was packed full of fun activities and learning adventures. This is what we’ve been up to lately.
Biology
We learned about pollination this month and how plants reproduce. We also learned about the pollinators and how the worlds food relies on them. We looked at ways we can make the different pollinators happy by providing plants in our gardens that support them as well as providing safe habitats for them to live in.
Maths
We have revisited area and volume this month. We often go over similar subjects after a couple of months just to ensure that it has been fully digested and that it has not been forgotten.
Science
We have been learning about where our drinking water comes from. How the waste water is carried away from our homes, how it is treated, stored and cleaned before returning as drinking water to our taps. We used an experiment from our STEM books to help understand water pressure. We also learned about crystal formations and brine shrimp from our National Geographic sets.
Reading & Writing
Joben is practising holding his pens properly as he can still be a little awkward with his grip. We have lots of colouring and painting time with him which he just loves. We make sure that we print off worksheets for most topics so that Jayden has to write the answers on paper practising both his reading and writing too.
We also had a lovely home-ed meet up with friends at the local library for a Pyjamarama party which was held by the BookTrust.
History
We had a fantastic day out at Sudbury hall learning about the Vernon family and the history of the hall. Attached to Sudbury hall is the National Museum of Childhood which has a fascinating collection of toys spanning the last 200 years and some from even earlier. It is a fun museum for all ages and encourages the children to interact as much as possible. There are lots of multimedia displays around and areas for the children to play with some of the toys.
Playtime
Finally, we have had a decent run of fine weather and have been outside as much as is physically possible. We have been playing with the water table, having water fights and playing in the pool. The trampoline is still a massive favourite along with football and badminton.

Gosh the boys seem to be sprouting up and it sounds like they’ve been working hard!
I think learning about plants, pollination and how plants reproduce is my teen’s most hated topic. It comes up again in GCSE’s and she found it so boring. x

Love your updates and always inspire me even though my children are older and both teens now. Having sent my 18 year old son overseas now, I feel more able to get my head around home educating the other two. Feeling slightly less overwhelmed thank goodness. Keep being amazing! #MMBC

Seems like you are providing your children, your boys with variety. Which can be good for us ” Variety is the Spice of Life”. Also little and often may likely be the best way to learn. As research has shown / proved that our attention span is about 20 minutes. This is likely for adults. Yet still I believe :- Lectures, Meetings,Seminars, Taks, Etc can last much longer than 20 minutes. Why? I do not believe any reason is EVER given.
Nice that yourself and your children meet up with others :- With a common Aim / Goal / Objective :- Learning / Education / Fun / Entertainment / Socialising.

I have been watching The Secret Teacher on tv tonight. We have been told via Government, Authorities, the Third Sector, Charities, Media :- Everyone is to Reach their Potential.
Just How is that to be Done / Achieved? Opportunities :- Possibly. But where are they?
In The Sectert Teacher a Business Owner / Entrepreneur / Millionaire offers Opportunities :- To a few. Just how is that Enabling Everyone to Reach their Potential???
It seems the Rich are being seen to Help / Assist the POOR. Why??? Is it to show that Businesses can do GOOD. If so, more is NEEDED. As each pupil needs to Reach their Potential. So there is a NEED for More Businesses to Invest in young people :- In order to Provide Opportunities.
Maybe in time the series show be Reviewed in order to show the long term outcomes of the few who got the Opportunity of these limited Opportunities of :- Extra Education through Training Courses. Experience in the World of Business. Mentoring, etc.
It would allow the Public to see what can be Effective. Possibly encouraging other Business Owners to Invest in youngsters, Offer Effective Life Opportunities.
We NEED some GOOD Furures for the Future Generations, etc.
Home Schooling must be a Challenge. It could also be Effective. This NEEDS to be Reviewed in the Future. As should Private Schooling. The British Royal family’s children receive Private Schooling. Maybe their Experiences, etc could be used as a Benchmark for others. Prince George’s school apparently encourages :- Kindness. So what are we to Expect of these Royal children in the Future. Hopefully no more ‘Sticking out One’s tongue in Public’ in regards to Princess Charlotte. Manners is something which was encouraged in all children by their parents in previous generations. It should be in this generation also. Prince Harry did behave similarly as a child. Though it seems not quite so obvious / blatantly as Princess Charlotte :- Her brother’s Christening. Just what is she Learning, and from Whom??
Schooling / Education can be Beneficial. Staff at many schools have had increased workloads due to Governmental policies, etc. We NEED Good Schools :- Buildings Fit for Purpose. Staff Fit for Purpose, as Well as Enabled for the Reality of their Tasks / Responsibilities. As all this Impacts on Our Future, Children’s Futures, Future Generation. Long Term!!!

Looks and sounds like you are doing an amazing job, a lot of people wouldn’t have the patience.
We were forced into home schooling when our daughter became ill with ME at 13, my daughter went for it whole heartedly and surprised us by gaining 6 passes B and above.

This looks so much fun, I’ve really been enjoying home schooling my children these last 4 months and am considering continuing. Ours days have looked similar to this (except for the trips out obviously!). I do find it hard with two different aged boys though. I think our highlight recently was learning all about world oceans day. We managed to craft, experiment, learn and even fit in a few worksheets with it for writing practice.
It looks like we could be doing this all over again 🤦🏼♀️
