A car is an investment, and one of the biggest ones you can make. It is therefore vital that you take time to choose the right car. With thousands of different cars on the market, all being designed with more and more features, it can make your decision much harder. Without sufficient knowledge of cars, you may be tempted to purchase the first (nice looking) vehicle that you see. Unfortunately, there are a range of different factors you should consider first, that are important to your investment.

Whether you want to avoid an impulse purchase, or can’t make up your mind, here are some top tips to help you choose the perfect car.

1 Budget

The first and most important factor to consider is your budget. You will need to consider if you are going to purchase the car upfront or opt for car finance. This will impact the amount of money you need to have ready, or how much money you need to ensure you have each month, for the length of the finance contract.

You will also need to consider additional costs, such as fuel, insurance, breakdown cover, tax, MOT and maintenance, etc. This is because each car will vary in cost. For example, a small 1-litre engine that is brand new, or only a few years old, will have smaller fuel and tax costs than a range rover. This is why it is important to consider initial costs, as well as ongoing costs.

2 Practicality

A car may look nice, but if it is not practical, then it will be a waste. It is important to consider your needs before purchasing a car. Will you need a smaller car for yourself to travel a short commute to work, or will it be a family car that requires safety features and more space? To make sure the car is suitable for the majority of your requirements, it can be helpful to compile a list of essential features that you can take with you to the dealership. You can also include features that you want but are willing to negotiate on.

3 Test drive

Where possible, always take the car you have your eyes on for a test drive. It might look good on paper, but not be what you wanted when you drive it. A test drive is a great way to get a feel for the car, see how it works, how much space you have, how comfortable you feel, and how smoothly it drives on the road. If it is a family car, you may wish to take everyone out for the test drive, to ensure it is suitable for the children, booster seats, and items you have to carry around.

Choosing the right car can be a challenge. With a range of dealerships, new features, additional costs, and so much more involved in the process, it can be a daunting purchase to make. Follow these tips to ensure you choose the best and most practical car for you.
