School should feel like a safe place for students, in which their wellbeing is front and centre of each day. This is what pastoral care in schools is all about; ensuring that every child is monitored closely so that they strive academically, while also maintaining their physical and emotional health and happiness. I have teamed up with a private school in Hertfordshire to explore the importance of pastoral care in further detail.
Every child is faced with obstacles throughout their lives, some big and some small. These might be issues within their friendship group, problems at home, or an academic setback, but whatever the trouble, they will need some extra assistance and encouragement. That is what pastoral care is for. It offers safe, non-judgemental support structure to each and every child in its care. As such, no child should ever feel alone with their troubles.
When choosing a school for a child, parents should consider the pastoral care provisions. How does the school monitor student progress? A child’s main pastoral carer is usually their form tutor; the member of staff who sees them once or twice a day, at least, and can therefore determine whether or not they are where they need to be in all aspects of their life. It’s important for parents to maintain regular contact with their child’s form tutor and keep them informed of any changes at home that might affect their performance in school or even just their general mood.
