When you’re younger you can get away with neglecting your health to some extent, but once you hit your late 20s – early 30s, and certainly when you become a parent, it’s time to start taking things more seriously. Good health is not a given, so it’s important that you do everything you can to get and stay healthy, not only for your sakec but also for the sake of your family. With that in mind, here are a few things you can do to get and stay in good health…

Move every day

We all know that exercise is good for us, but many of us skip it because we don’t like it…because we haven’t got time for it…because we have children to look after. These may all be factual statements, but they are no excuse. If you want to be healthy you need to exercise, and exercise doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym or pounding the pavements. Just moving around more throughout the day, whether that be taking the stairs instead of the lift or walking to school instead of driving, will help. Move as much as you can as often as you can and you will see benefits.

Maintain your diet

When you’re a busy parent, it’s easy to grab unhealthy convenience foods on the go or just eat your child’s leftovers to save time – neither of which is a healthy choice. If you want to be as healthy as you can possibly be, you need to eat good healthy food in the right size portion for your frame. You can do this by looking at portion size guides and by ensuring that most of the food you buy is in the form of healthy whole foods. Sure, you can treat yourself to some chocolate or a pack of crisps every now and again, but don’t do it every day. Stick to three balanced meals a day, and if you must snack, fruit and veggies are your friends. It’s pretty simple really.

Deal with issues

Most of us have small health niggles we ignore or bigger problems we bury our heads in the sand about, but the longer you put things off, the worse they usually get. Whether you need help with an alcohol problem, support from a counsellor for a mental health issue, or a GP to check out a worrying symptom, be proactive and take care of it today. Yes, it might feel embarrassing, scary, or overwhelming, but taking action will help — and more importantly, it could save your life!

Eat properly

It is so easy when we are busy to fall into the trap of not preparing anything for dinner and relying on takeaway, throwing something out of the freezer into the oven or calling in the shop on your way home to grab a ready meal. I have been guilty of all of these in the past and have benefitted hugely by meal planning.
It is so important to make sure that we are getting the right amount of vitamins and minerals from our diets. But let’s be honest—no matter how much we try, busy schedules, dietary restrictions, or even food quality can sometimes leave gaps in our nutrition. While meal planning helps, a high-quality supplement like WOWMD NutriMax Essentials can be a great way to ensure your body is getting the essential nutrients it needs.  This type of supplement designed to support overall health, making it an excellent option for those who struggle with maintaining a balanced diet daily.

Obviously, we can all take supplements, but with a little forward planning, we might not always need to. If you are concerned that you are not getting enough vitamins and minerals, there are vitamin tests available to help identify any deficiencies.

Stop spending so much time on your phone

Smartphones are one of the greatest tools we have when it comes to being able to organise our lives, make appointments, pay our bills and…well what can’t you do on a smartphone? However, they can also be pretty problematic, especially if you’re glued to them a lot, especially if you use them extensively in the evenings. Not only can excessive use cause problems with posture, muscle pain and strain injuries, but it can also prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. This is bad news because the body needs sleep to repair itself. Not only that but if you don’t get enough sleep, you’re more likely to gain weight, suffer from depression, and increase your risk of heart disease amongst other things. Turn it off at least an hour before bed, and try to use it less during the day and you will see benefits.

Get a better work-life balance

Stress is a major source of physical and mental unwellness. So, it makes sense to do everything you can to minimise the stresses in your life. If you’re a busy parent and if you work, this can be difficult, but it’s important to try. Even if you are only able to schedule a couple of hours of you-time each week, that’s a start, although the more relaxation time you can carve out for yourself the better. Have a bubble bath, read a great book, go for a country walk-  do whatever it is that enables you to decompress and don’t feel guilty about it because, by looking after yourself, you are ensuring that you can look after others.

By taking good care of yourself, even if it means taking small steps towards better health, you will set yourself up for a longer, healthier and happier life with your family.  That has to make it all worthwhile, right?
