If you’re hoping to have a baby, either now or in the future, there are various things you can do to prepare your body and increase your chances of a successful pregnancy. Unfortunately, as many as 1 in 6 couples struggle to conceive a child, which could in part be due to a lack of education surrounding fertility. It would be wise to visit your GP for a full check-up and some general advice.
Your GP will also be able to assess your full medical history and determine whether or not you are likely to be able to get pregnant. Certain STIs or cancer treatments may lead to infertility. For instance, chlamydia can cause damage or scarring of the fallopian tubes, especially if left untreated. Consequently, your GP may be able to suggest some fertility treatment options, should you need them.
There are various, simple lifestyle adjustments you can make to prepare your body for pregnancy. For example, it’s crucial to quit smoking if you want to become pregnant. Help is available if you need it! You should also avoid alcohol both before and during pregnancy. Smoking and drinking will hinder your chances of becoming pregnant.
Introducing some different foods to your diet can ensure you’re as healthy as possible. Oily fish, including salmon and mackerel, are fantastic fertility boosting foods, as they are filled with Omega-3 which plays an important role in regulating the reproductive cycle. Eggs, garlic, avocado and full fat dairy should also be introduced to your diet where possible. Avoid caffeine and fatty/sugary snacks. Being overweight when pregnant can cause a range of issues, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, which can then lead to miscarriage. With that said, excessive dieting or exercise can also
be detrimental to your fertility, as it can prevent your menstrual cycle. Try and aim for a BMI of
anywhere between 18.5 and 24.9.
