If there’s one thing my boys love, it’s Formula 1! We’re a household of F1 fans, although I have to admit, they’re far more enthusiastic about it than I am. They love following the races, keeping up with their favourite drivers and pretty much anything else to do with motorsport.
So, when we were kindly sent the Racing Line board game, along with the Italia and Texas expansion tracks, I knew it would be a popular choice for our next family games night.
A Little About Racing Line
Racing Line is a family-friendly racing board game where players compete to become the overall racing champion.
Rather than just taking part in one race, you can play an entire season, collecting points as you go. A full season consists of six races, although you can choose to play fewer depending on how much time you have.
The aim is simple enough. Get your car around the circuit, cross the finish line ahead of your opponents and collect as many points as possible. Of course, there’s a little more to it than simply rolling the dice and hoping for the best!

Ready, Set, Race!
Just like in Formula 1, every race begins with qualifying. Each player rolls the dice to determine their starting position, with the highest roll taking pole position and the lowest starting at the back of the grid. Once everyone’s in position, the racing begins!
Players take turns rolling the dice and moving their cars around the circuit. You can move forwards and sideways, but there’s also a quicker route around the track known as the racing line. This is marked by purple spaces and allows you to move diagonally, which can give you a useful advantage over the other players. Naturally, everyone wants to get onto the racing line, so you soon find yourself trying to work out the best route while keeping an eye on what everyone else is doing. And that’s where the fun really starts!
There’s also the added excitement of incident cards, which can change what’s happening during a race. They might affect the starting order or help someone who’s fallen behind catch up with the leaders. So even if you’re doing rather well, things can change pretty quickly.
Some areas of the track offer opportunities to collect bonus points too, giving players another reason to think carefully about their moves.
At the end of each race, points are awarded according to finishing positions. These are added together throughout the season, and whoever has the most points at the end wins.

A Bit of Family Competition!
I think what makes Racing Line such an enjoyable family game is that there’s a nice balance between luck and strategy. You can plan your moves and try to take advantage of the racing line, but there’s always the possibility of someone catching you up thanks to a lucky dice roll or a well-timed incident card.
I also like that you can choose how long you want to play. Sometimes we just fancy getting a board game out for a little while, so having the option to play a single race is really handy. But if you’ve got more time, playing a full season is great fun too. With points carrying over between races, there’s plenty of opportunity for the overall standings to change.

Taking the Racing Further With the Italia and Texas Expansions
Now, something else I really liked about Racing Line was the option to add expansion tracks. We were kindly sent both the Italia and Texas expansions to try alongside the original game, and I think they’re a brilliant addition.
One of the things I always look for in a board game is replay value. It’s lovely finding something the whole family enjoys, but even better when there’s enough variety to keep everyone coming back to it. And that’s exactly what the expansion tracks offer.
Racing Line Italia Expansion
The Italia expansion introduces a new circuit to the game, giving you another track to race around. It’s a great way to mix things up, particularly once you’ve become familiar with the original circuit.
For the F1 fans in our house, having a choice of tracks makes the game even more appealing. And from my point of view, I just enjoy having something a little different to play each time!
Racing Line Texas Expansion
The Texas expansion is another great addition, offering a different circuit for players to tackle.
Both expansions add another level of interest to Racing Line, and I think they’re well worth considering if you enjoy the original game. You do need the base game to play them, but they’re a lovely way to build on something you already enjoy.

Is Racing Line Just for F1 Fans?
Absolutely not! I think that’s one of the things I liked most about it. Yes, if you’ve got someone in the family who’s mad about Formula 1, there’s a good chance they’ll love the racing theme. But you don’t need to be a die-hard fan to have fun.
Racing Line is simply a fun board game with plenty of friendly competition. The rules are straightforward enough to get to grips with, and once everyone knows what they’re doing, you can concentrate on enjoying the race.
If you’re looking for a new game to add to your family board game collection, or you’re buying for someone who loves Formula 1, I’d definitely recommend giving Racing Line a try!
