Mealtimes in our house have always been spent together around the table. We eat together, we drink together, we laugh together and we chat. It has always been this way since my boys were big enough to go in their highchairs.
We were recently asked by the lovely folk at Portmeirion to share our top tips for making kids mealtimes fun and to sit down and eat as a family. So if you are finding mealtimes a struggle then I hope that my tips and tricks see your little ones counting down the minutes until dinner!
Involve Your Children
My oldest loves cooking and that’s down to always being involved with the prepping of meals. I’m hoping little one will follow suit. I always try to involve them both where I can. From baking cookies to prepping veg, they love to help and look forward to being rewarded with a tasty meal that they have made by themselves.

I also find having their own baking set makes it more fun and you could get some matching plates and a tea towel so that they really feel like a little professional chef.

Pick Or Grow Your Own Produce
Getting the kids to help with sourcing the ingredients is another good way to get them involved. They will love the fact that what everybody is eating has been picked by their own little hands, and they will be more likely to clear their plate.
We grow our own veggies too. Jayden helps look after the plants and picks the produce when ready. He has become quite the little gardener.

Do Themed Dinner Parties
My boys love it when I put on a themed dinner. Firstly I decide on what theme we are going with, that might be a greek night, Spanish, American, Hawaiian, whatever the kids fancy really. I then print off decorations such as flags and banners to tie in with our theme. It’s fun and they get to learn about different countries and cultures as they eat. We had a bit of a change the other as we had a teddy bears picnic for the youngest. I appreciate that this won’t be a daily thing, especially when time isn’t on your side but you can plan ahead and perhaps have one every other week.
