We were only saying last week how mild this winter has been and how quickly spring seems to have come around. This time last year we were still knee deep in snow from the Beast From The East. This year the daffodils are in full bloom and the garden is covered in spring bulbs sprouting their heads through trying to get a bit of sunlight.
Now that the weather is warming up it is easy to forget about how cold it can get in our home and just how hard our central heating systems have to work to keep us toasty warm. It is always important to take the time to remember to get everything serviced and checked in time for next winter.
Through the warmer months, it is much easier to be without hot water and as you don’t have the heating turned on, you can cope if your heating has to have any work done on it, or if you have to wait for parts.
This way, when you need to get your heating on in the autumn, everything works as it should. I honestly don’t think that there is anything worse than having to spend nights in a cold house waiting for your central heating boilers to be repaired or worse replaced completely.
We have a stove which heats our property. The stove is responsible for providing the hot water for our central heating so we always make sure that this is serviced. It doesn’t matter what type of heating system you have in your home. It can be gas, solid fuel or Kerosene, every one of them needs to be maintained.
We also have an open fire in the living room. So we will be having our chimneys swept and replacing any worn parts in the fire grates.
Not only does having your boiler serviced increases its reliability, but it also ensures that it is safe. In 2015, 53 people died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in their homes. We have carbon monoxide alarms next to every fire in our home. So as well as getting the boiler serviced, it is also a good idea to check your CO and smoke alarms.
When are you having your boiler serviced?
It’s miserable being in a house without warmth and hot water. Although it’s tempting to put off a boiler service, it really does need to be properly maintained so annual service invitations should always be accepted.
