From installing child locks when our kids are small to adding training wheels to their first bike. Yes, as parents, we spend so much of our time trying to keep our kids safe. The thing is that it’s not just dangers in the physical world that we need to protect our children from these days, but the ones online as well. Thankfully, there are some specific actions you can take to maximize your child’s safety online. Keep reading to find out what they are.
Educate yourself on and use parental controls
If your child knows more about the devices and platforms that they are using than you, then you have a problem on your hands. After all, you will find it so much more difficult to manage their use of devices if this is the case.
Fortunately, you don’t have to have a master’s degree in computing to make sure your child is safe online. Indeed, you can use the parental controls that come with most devices and on many platforms for this very purpose.
In fact, there are two approaches you can use here. The first is to use the built-in controls that come with your child’s smartphone or tablet. While the second is to increase the level of protection for your child by investing in a premium security app. The good news is that this article tells you all you need to know about such apps, including whether you can use them to track your child’s physical location in the real world. A feature that as well as keep an eye on their activity online, can be very useful.
Open a dialogue about your child’s internet activity
All too often, kids can see what they do online as separate from their ‘real’ life. However, you must educate your child on the fact that the internet is not a safe bubble that can never impact their wellbeing and safety in real life.
One of the best ways of doing this is to make sure you keep a dialogue open concerning your child’s internet activity. Of course, it’s better to do this conversationally rather than launching into the Inquisition every time they open an app. Indeed, this behaviour could cause them to begin hiding their activity online and only make the situation worse.
Such discussion can be incredibly useful for several reasons, including that it can help bring up topics of safety and appropriate behavior online in a natural and relevant way. Something that can make them easier to deal with and more meaningful for your child.
Keep an eye on who they are ‘friending’
One of the biggest draws of the internet is the opportunity it allows us and our children to connect with their friends. Unfortunately, not everyone is exactly who they say they are online and this can leave our kids vulnerable to those that do not have good intentions.
With that in mind, keeping an eye on who their friends are is a smart tactic. You can even add these people to your friendship group if you like, so you can safely monitor posts and interactions.

This is so important at the moment with more kids than ever using computers and devices to get online to do home schooling. x
This is a great read
It’s so hard to find a balance between knowing what a child is doing online and letting them have their independence. I think that the bottom line is to keep dialogue open and talk to them when they are away from screens, we often talk during family mealtimes.
