Easy Ways to Update Your Bedroom

Often, when making improvements on the home, it’s easy to overlook the bedroom. After all, you don’t usually do much other than sleep in it – so why would you want to update it?
Having a more visually appealing bedroom not only creates a pleasant environment to relax in; it can also boost the value of your property too. Here are a few cheap and easy ways to breathe new life into this often under-appreciated room.

Add Some Shelves

If you’re good at DIY, then you could add a few shelves into an alcove to create a mini-bookshelf. Alternatively, add some shallow shelves to display your favourite photos on.

Change Your Pictures

Have you got artwork on the walls that have been there for years? If so, it could be time to invest in a few replacements. Buy a print of a painting you’ve always loved and hang it over the bed, or choose a vintage movie poster instead.

Get Organised

If your bedroom always looks cluttered, now is the time to take action. A few attractive baskets can be placed on top of the wardrobe to store accessories and nightwear, for example. Your make-up can be easily stored in a compartmentalised tray, and your less frequently worn clothes can be packed under the bed in vacuum-sealed bags. A few boxes and baskets don’t cost a lot, but can make a big difference.

Move The Furniture Around

Sometimes, just changing the position of the bed and your dressing table can make the room feel entirely different, and use the space more effectively too. Experiment with different layouts until you find one that works for you.

Create A Feature Wall

Stone cladding systems are a great way to fake the ‘brick wall’ look in your bedroom, and they’re not too expensive to buy either. Otherwise, a lick of vibrant paint on one of the walls creates an attractive feature, as does a bit of patterned wallpaper.

Bring Some Scent Into The Room

Sometimes, bedrooms can smell a little stale (to put it politely). A perfumed candle is a great way to introduce a more pleasant aroma, particularly those infused with designer fragrances like Coco Mademoiselle. A room diffuser also does the job nicely.

Change The Lampshades

A feature lampshade can immediately add an interesting focal point
to the room. Ditch the old, stained shade and invest in a new, modern one instead. Shops
like Ikea have some great options.

Invest In A Bedspread

If your bedding is looking a bit dated, you don’t necessarily need to replace it entirely. A simple bedspread is a cost-effective, easy way to transform the look of your bed, by either adding a pop of colour or an interesting visual pattern. If you’re good at sewing, you may even want to make one yourself, as they’re not too tricky to make.

Uncover a fireplace (or add a fake one)

If you live in a period property, you may well have a fireplace hidden behind your wall. You can usually tell by giving it a tap. If so, you may want

To uncover it – you can then either leave it as a brick fireplace feature or add an original fireplace surround. These can sometimes be picked up cheaply at a reclamation yard. If you live in a modern house, you could easily add a fake fireplace surround to create a mantlepiece effect.

Change The Radiator

By changing your radiator you can add a real sense of style to the room. Traditional cast iron radiators have become increasingly popular recently and give a real retro vibe.

Strip The Carpets

If the carpet is looking threadbare, it’s not too difficult to rip it up, then sand down the floorboards underneath. You’ll also need to varnish or paint them, to prevent them from looking too ‘raw’.
