I think often we can tend to take for granted the little things. Like walking, going to the toilet, taking a shower and so on. All seem such simple tasks, that is if you are not a wheelchair user. Everyday tasks can become a nightmare for wheelchair users if they don’t have accessible entries implemented into their homes. Here are four ways to make life easier by carrying out simple adjustments to the home.
Easy Entry
Having a ramp fitted at the front and back entrance of a home is paramount when a wheelchair user lives there. Nobody should have to struggle to enter and leave their own property. Having a ramp fitted with rails to either side will help one keep their independence. Contacting the council would be the first port of call to get the ball rolling. Also making sure the driveway is accessible for a mobility vehicle to park if need be.
Wide Door Frames
To enable somebody in a wheelchair to move freely from room to room, there will need to be wide framed doors in place. A standard wheelchair is around 600mm wide so the frames are going to have to be considerably wider than that. A standard door would be too much of a squeeze to get through.
Suitable Flooring
A wheelchair can cause considerable wear on carpets and ideally needs a nice smooth surface to be able to move along with little effort. Wooden flooring is a very good option as it is quite hard wearing and easy to clean. Vinyl would also be another good option.
Suitable Washing Facilities
A conventional shower or bath is not going to be any use to accommodate a wheelchair. However, a walk-in shower has ample room for one to shower in. There are so many designs to choose from and can be totally tailored to suit the customer’s requirements. A walk-in shower can also save money on your water bills.
