Birthdays come and go and I’ve never really bothered with my age, after all it’s only a number! That is what I have always said, until now. What’s changed? I hear you ask. The big 40 is waiting for me, I will be turning 40 at the end of this year and I’m so not impressed. Silly really and I don’t know why this birthday is any different from the others, but it just seems like a much bigger milestone to hit. So to lighten up the fact that I am getting older and will soon be leaving my thirties for good, here are a few tell tale signs that I am heading for………….
The Naughty 40’s
I prefer flats to high heels. In fact, I don’t do heels at all now. I am quite happy plodding along in my converse or biker style boots. Heels are now well and truly left in my early twenties and won’t be coming out again anytime soon.
My age has become more apparent when it comes to filling in forms. You know the part when it asks for the year you were born? Well, I’m scrolling for forever these days, 1979 is a long way down the list! God knows how I don’t wear out the scroll wheel on my mouse!
Scheduling my weekends around what my husband and I are going to binge watch on Netflix, rather than all-nighters filled with beer, cocktails, dancing and waking up the next morning with the mother of all hangovers. Kids and hangovers don’t mix! Been there, done that, never going there again.
Fifty shades of grey! And not a red room in sight I tell you! More wisps of wild grey strands poke through my blonde hair. I am naturally blonde, but as I have got older my hair has gone a few shades darker so I dye it. Looks like I will be dying it more often these days.
Googling the best skincare products out there. I’ve never really had a skincare routine, other than cleansing and slapping on a bit of moisturiser when my skin becomes dry. Now I am wanting all of the moisturisers and anti-ageing creams. I need to control these crows feet! The struggle is real.
But with all that said and done, it really is just another birthday I suppose. The main thing is – I’m ridiculously happy, I’m healthy, I’m alive! And I still have reasonable control over my bladder. Life is good and I’m kind of looking forward to ageing disgracefully!
Are you about to hit a milestone birthday? Did any phase you at all?

hahaha! Yes to all of this!
I can’t remember the last time I wore heels. I have some in the cupboard which haven’t seen the light of day in years!
I would much rather have a few quiet drinks in the house than go for a wild night out.
I’m 40 a month before you! lol I’ll let you know how it is. I’m sure not much will change. Age is just a number after all.
Perfect. This is exactly how I felt! Only. Trouble. Is I’m hitting 50 next year! The years literally fly by now and you suddenly realise how little time we are given. It’s so precious. Enjoy ?
I thought I was embracing aging but am increasingly checking my dark hair for grays and looking at bras that help hitch me up to my previous perkiness!
I didnt particularly like my 50th birthday. Now I am learning to embrace all birthdays. I lost an old friend at 48 2 years ago. My hairdresser passed at 47 4 years, our friend last year unexpectedly at the age of 62 and worse my husband soul mate and best friend just over a year ago. My husband was 60. I will always grieve cos I will always love him.
Its s sharp check in reality that none of us know what is around the corner and to enjoy every day. I hope you had a lovely birthday. Just enjoy. I loved my 40s. I was free of the ex, finding me and the man I was with for 16 years physically and forever in spirit. Yes though I am not to keen on the 60 due in 3 years I will remember this
I have another six years before the big 4-0 and i tick all of your list there already! heels on a night out (which is rare these days!) = sore back in the morning and i’m already hunting for the best ageing cream, my mother in law uses stuff which is 70quid a bottle, it’s amazing but oh my gosh the troubles us women have to do through! I got my hair done today at the hairdressers to get the greys covered which i’ve started noticing more of now, my hubby doesn’t seem bothered at all with his greys. It’s definitely tough being a woman!
Mine is next year & I’m trying not to think about it! Can def relate to this post though! #MMBC
As someone approaching 50, never mind 40, your post made me giggle! I wear converse daily and I have embraced the grey hair. No more dying for me!
HA try scrolling down to my birthdate! I am more than old enough to be your mother and still fight the grey hair but it is so hard to colour. Still love shoes.
Oh yes! To most of these. When I turned 40 I was really anxious about it. Not sure why but I was. The idea of getting older I guess. I’ll be 42 in a few months and I gotta say, It’s not that much different than my 30’s. Maybe more Netflix these days but not much else 🙂 Thanks for hosting #MMBC
Gosh I am headed to the big 50 in August but keeping it low key. I always wear flats now and can’t drink much these days as get really bad headache the next day and yes like you say having lively kids doesn’t help ?
