The county of East Sussex has something for everyone. Located along the southern coast of the UK, it’s an area filled with historical sites, chalk cliffs and trendy seaside towns.
According to data from the Office for National Statistics, just shy of one million international visitors stepped foot in the county in 2017.
Much of East Sussex is accessible from London in around 1-2 hours, making it an ideal destination for weekend days out and bank holiday fun with the family. It’s a little further for my lot from our cosy home in Staffordshire – but that hasn’t stopped us ticking off several of the key sites. Here are four of our favourite things to do in East Sussex!
Royal Pavilion, Brighton
There are tonnes of reasons to come to Brighton – and the eye-catching Royal Pavilion is close to the top of the list. The exotic palace looks like something out of a fairy-tale, and its pristine gardens are the ideal place for a stroll on a Summer day. And the best bit? It’s only a five-minute walk from the beach! Jumping on the train to Brighton from London Bridge will take you there in just over an hour, so it’s worth making a day of it and heading to the seaside.
Seven Sisters Country Park
East Sussex is famous for its rolling hills and white cliffs, and visiting the vast Seven Sisters Country Park is a great way to see this unspoilt coastline. Whether you’re walking, cycling or even paddle boarding, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
My kids love being outdoors, so this was a winner for everyone. If you’re lucky you might be able to spot amazing wildlife while you’re there – we saw elegant wading birds, blossoming flowers and beautiful butterflies.
Bodiam Castle
Bodiam Castle has been around since 1385 and is one of the best-known castles in the country. Its iconic moat and soaring towers are enough to get anyone’s imagination going – especially my young boys!
As well as being a site of fascinating ruins, the castle hosts some great educational events throughout the year too.
Drusillas Park
Who doesn’t love a day out at the zoo? Drusillas Park is comfortably one of the best we’ve visited in the UK, and boasts a whole host of exotic animals, adventure play areas and safari- themed rides. We treated our little ones to a penguin feeding experience when we were there, which as you can imagine was amazing. The zookeepers were great with the kids too!

We visited Brighton Pavilion last summer. It was such a wet and rainy day that nobody was allowed to swim at the beach and all of the rides were closed. It was still a fun outing though :o)

I have just come back from East Sussex and had a wonderful time, hitting all the tourist spots, can highly recommend a trip there
I love Sussex, so much to see and do, never gor so far as Brighton, but on our list for 2020
Ive been to Brighton so many times and driven past the royal pavilion, unable to take my eyes off it, and have never actaully been inside and visited !! I will be making a definate plan to in the future, many thanks for the inspiration…..
