With holiday season just around the corner it is so important to make sure that you make your house as secure as possible. I have put together a list of 10 home security tips to make sure that your home will be safe while you are away, allowing you to enjoy your holiday in total relaxation.
Timers for lights
You don’t need to rely on big clunky timers that you plug into the wall any more. There are a variety of wireless solutions that allow you to control your lights with Alexa. Alternatively, you can buy a wireless digital light switch timer that sits over your existing wall light switch and can be programmed to turn your lights on and off up to nine times a day.
Check all of your locks
Make sure that all of your locks, doors and windows work properly. Always check that you have locked the windows before going away.
Check your burglar alarm
Burglar alarms need to be maintained. How many alarms go off in your neighbourhood when the power goes off? Each one of these alarms needs maintenance. Get your alarm checked and any sensors adjusted or replaced as necessary.
Check your security lights
Make sure that your security lighting is working properly. This means checking the bulbs and that the sensors are adjusted correctly. Nobody pays attention to a security light that is going on and off every time a cat walks past.
Check your fencing and gates
Make sure to repair any damaged fencing or gates before you go away. Replace any broken fence panels and check that all of your gates lock securely.
Put everything away
Do not leave keys in sight or anywhere near a letterbox, make sure that all of the valuables are put away in the garden and that ladders and tools are out of sight. Don’t leave opportunists the tools to break into your home.
Move your valuables
You might not be taking your family heirlooms on holiday, but don’t leave them for the robbers to chuck in their swag bags either. Leave any valuable jewellery with family or better still, get a safety deposit box and secure all of your valuables there.
Secure your outbuildings
So you have put all of your belongings in the garage or shed, is that tiny padlock going to keep everything safe? Get a lock and staple that is approved. Also, check your insurance, many policies state the minimum requirements for the lock. If your lock is not up to the required standard, your insurance will not pay out.

Great tips, I’d also add that sometimes leaving a pair of workboots visible or a big coat can make it seem as thoughsomeone is home.

If you normally have a car parked on your drive see if any of the neighbours would like to park on your drive while you are away to make the house look occupied.
I think the light timer is a great idea and definitely something I will look into.

We always ask our neighbour to bring the post in for us. So it’s not sticking out of the letterbox or on the floor inside (as we have a glass door). Also luckily we have a “nosy parker” as a neighbour, who would question anyone they didn’t know who was in our garden or by the front door. Another good idea, is if you use social media, don’t write all over it that you are going away.
I have been thinking about a smart camera for a while, especially for keeping an eye on my cat. I had no idea they were so affordable.
