Valentine’s day is just around the corner and most of us will be popping here and there to get a little something for our other halves. We all know what it’s like, you both say you won’t buy presents and then one of you decides to just get a little something. Then on Valentine’s day, one of you is left feeling guilty and it makes you wonder why the event even exists!
Historically, Saint Valentine was imprisoned by the Romans for performing marriage ceremonies for soldiers of the Roman army. The soldiers were not allowed to marry and any priest performing these ceremonies was executed. Saint Valentine fell in love with the blind daughter of one of the Roman generals, he restored her sight and left a love letter before he was beheaded signed your Valentine.
At some point in the 18th century, the tradition of giving confectionary and flowers as well as greeting cards known as Valentines began. Over the last 200 years, the celebration has grown to what is now celebrated throughout the English speaking world. Valentine’s day is a huge source of income for many businesses, florists, in particular, are known to increase the price on their roses by 300%. The stores are all full of special Valentine’s chocolates, which are less chocolate in fancy packaging and more money. Most of the restaurants are serving a special menu, they bring out extra tables so there is less room and you have to eat your dinner as fast as you can because there is another couple waiting for your table after you!
Have you thought of celebrating Valentines after the 14th of February though? Restaurants are much more relaxed, flowers are better quality as well as less expensive and the usual selection of chocolates has returned to the shelves of the supermarket.
I personally believe that it doesn’t need Valentine’s Day to show your partner how much you love them, but it’s the thought that counts, whether it be a kind gesture such as breakfast in bed or a nice card from Card Factory to cherish forever.
