As a family, we love to discover new places and see what the local area has to offer. Our previous short stay in Devon was absolutely amazing. It is easy to overlook just how many beautiful places we have here in Britain. As the number of staycations increase and around half of all of us look to holiday in the U.K. I thought I would share with you some of our top tips for short breaks in Devon.
Make An Itinerary
I think this goes without saying when you have a holiday coming up. We like to see as much as possible during our stay, so we looked at the surrounding areas and the places that we would love to explore. Perhaps a friend has stayed in the same area and could recommend some places to visit. There are so many family-friendly attractions, the Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth was just one of our favourites.
Take Your Pets
Do you have a furbaby? When my little faithful old friend was with us, he loved nothing more than coming on holiday with us and taking a dip in the sea.
There are some lovely self-catering cottages that allow pets in the property. After all, dogs are a member of the family too so why shouldn’t they come along too!
Find Family Friendly Walks
One of the many things I love about Devon is just how picturesque it is. There are some lovely walks with breathtaking views. The National Trust is a great place to start. We chose the Salcombe Hill Circular Walk which was a lovely leisurely stroll for us all. It wasn’t too challenging for the children and it was a nice energy burner before heading back to our accommodation for tea and bathtime.
Go Fossil Hunting
The famous Jurassic coast is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and embraces the East Devonshire coastline. Starting in Exmouth and ending 95 miles away in Dorset, the Jurassic coast is world renowned. The layers of sedimentary rock are visible in the cliffs for miles upon end, these layers span the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods and have given so much insight to last 185 million years of our world.
The amount of fossils that have been found on the beaches in this area is astounding and has helped historians discover many species. On some beaches, such as Charmouth, you can actually search for fossils yourself. There are so many interesting visitor centres dotted around the area, all offering the opportunity to learn more about the fantastic things that you can spot while enjoying the beautiful panoramas.

Obviously it isn’t as good as Cornwall (ha!) but I do love Devon, we’ve had some really lovely holidays there in the past.

Lovely article. I would love to visit Devon but being in the North I would need to have a longer stay to justify the travelling.
Love Devon – there’s so much to do and see. We used to stay at Morwenstowe (just on the Devon/Cornwall border) where you could be at the beach or in the countryside in equal amounts of time. We stayed in a lovely bungalow with sea and countryside views which had great walking for the dog too.
I love it in Devon. I’m looking forward to taking my little ones when they’re a bit bigger! Cnat take them just yet as they’d send me crackers in the car for 7 hours!!

We spend a lot of time at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth that is Free and always spend in the shop and put money in the box.
