It will be 2 years this November since we moved into our home. I can’t believe it has been that long, it certainly doesn’t feel like it. When we moved we had very little help. Craig and I did pretty much all of it by ourselves and moving house with young children and a house full of boxes, to say it was a little stressful would be an understatement!
However, we did as much as we could to make the move go as smoothly as possible and here are just a few tips for moving home that helped us tremendously.
Redirect your mail
I think this is a good thing to set up as soon as you can. That way it gives you a chance to make sure that everyone will be informed of your change of address and you won’t miss any important mail. I have used this service provided by Royal Mail and I can’t praise them enough!
Start Packing Early
If possible try to pack as early as you can. Sort all of the things that you can do without and get it packed away. It will save heaps of time and won’t be so stressful when the moving date approaches.
Use Appropriate Storage Solutions
You may need to put your belongings into storage. There are some fab companies that will pick up your belongings and then drop them to your new home at a date that best suits you.
If you have multiple cars and will need them to be transported, or if you have a vintage vehicle and want to ensure that it isn’t damaged during transit, it would be worth looking at companies similar to CarsRelo. This will give you peace of mind, knowing that your vehicles will be transported safely to your new home!
You may also want to consider using vac bags for larger items such as quilts and cushions to save on as much space as you can.
Desiccant bags for your home storage is another super way to protect your belongings. They significantly reduce humidity levels to prevent condensation and moisture damage during transport.
Pack A Supplies Box
Pack essentials together such as tea bags, kettle and toilet roll. They will be easily accessible should you need them.
It’s always nice to take a break with a cup of tea after mauling boxes to and fro all day long!
Are you planning a move? Do you have any tips?

we moved last year and had 31 years of stuff to sort. we gave around 40% of everything that we had acquired over the decades that we didn’t use and a lot of things we didn’t even know what they were for to Charity. Had we have had a use for it all we would have had to use a storage facility.
I’m hoping to put my house up for sale next spring and buy another house/bungalow. I’m dreading it already just thinking about it – last time was really stressful. This time I will be on my own, so even more stressful. Luckily I am a very organised person. I’ve nearly finished decorating the whole house ready. I’m trying to de-clutter as much as I can and will keep doing over the next few months. I always do a mail redirection and will definitely be making a supplies box
This is a great list! I hate moving, but it’s good to have a list like this. #MMBC
Your supplies box idea is good, I’ll remember that next time I move.
Redirect your mail is a good one and I’ve used that.
Using vac bags is such a great idea as Quilts and cushions take up so much room
