I really like this time of year, because I can get back in the garden and prepare it for the year ahead. New shoots can be seen breaking through the soil and light green buds give new life to old foliage. There is so much to be getting on with in February. Here are a few pointers to put you in the right direction and prep your garden for a Summer full of blooms.
Tidy Up
Cut out all of that dead grass that has grown wild over Winter. SGS have some fab gardening tools to get the job done. Clean up slippy pathways and slabbed areas that have most probably gained mossy residue and rotten leaves over the past few months. A good pressure washer will do the trick.
Pruning
Prune Ivy right back to prevent it growing wild during the Summer months. Cut back clematis to achieve a good show come July. Tidy up Winter pansies and discard of any faded flowers to encourage more flourishes once the weather warms up. Cut all dead stems from ornamental grasses and trim back heathers to prevent them from going leggy.
Prepare Vegetable Beds
Now is the time to sew your vegetables under cover. Building some raised flower beds are perfect for starting off your seeds as they keep the soil warmer and drain faster too.
Wildlife Watch
It’s about that time now, where hedgehogs return from their hibernation and by putting out food will be a huge help to the spiky guys! And of course, don’t forget our birds. Seeds, peanuts and suet balls are all healthy treats and will invite no end of wonderful species to your garden. You could even get your kids/grandchildren involved and make some 5-minute bird feeders.

I am an avid bird watcer, so always have food on their feeding station, will also put some dog food out for passing hedgehogs
We don’t have much of a garden but what we do have needs tidying up….The rose bush needs trimming, the paths cleaning and our back yard. Eek! x
Hi, these are helpful tips, you can’t beat using the pressure washer to clean the patios. We have several bird feeders and the birds seem to love suet balls it’s lovely just to sit and watch them #MMBC
there is always something to be done in the garden, at the moment all I can do is sweep up the leaves and wait unti Spring.
