Soccer players have different nutritional needs compared to the general public. Soccer players require more carbohydrates to maintain energy and strength and more vitamins and minerals for peak performance and recovery.

In this article, we discuss the nutritional needs of athletes and give meal examples for training diets, hydration needs, what to eat before games, what to eat during games, and post-match recovery.

Training Diet for Soccer

Soccer players in a soccer academy should adjust their food intake to match the severity of the training session. For example, during lighter training sessions, a diet with a bit of carbohydrates is needed because the body does not require a lot of energy.

Conversely, during heavy training sessions, a diet rich in carbohydrates is needed to provide more energy and promote recovery.

Hydration Needs

Having fluids with snacks and meals, carrying a water bottle wherever you go, and drinking 200 to 600ml of water before your training session begins helps optimize hydration levels.

What To Eat Before Games

When in a soccer academy, it is important to start games when your body is well-fueled. Some great pre-game meals include:

  • Pasta with beef mince;
  • Chicken stir-fry with quinoa or rice;
  • Pumpkin soup served with crispy mashed potatoes.

You can also have a small snack one to two hours before the game begins. Some good pre-game snacks include:

  • Toast with cheese;
  • Yoghurt with fruit salad;
  • Peanut butter and rice cakes.

What To Eat and Drink during Games

During games, you only have the halftime break to hydrate and snack. You can drink water or electrolyte drinks if you have heavy fluid losses or high energy requirements. You can also eat fruit or muesli bars or other sports nutrition products such as energy bars.

If you have a high workload, for instance, if you are a box-to-box midfielder, you should have a carbohydrate snack like a turkey roll-up.

Post-Match Recovery

When training in a soccer academy, ensure that recovery snacks and meals contain lots of fluids to replace sweat losses, some protein for muscle repair, and carbohydrates to boost energy. Some suitable post-match recovery meal suggestions include:

  • Fruit smoothie;
  • Chicken sandwich;
  • Burritos with cheese, beef, and salad.

While in a soccer academy, it is vitally important for you to follow optimal dietary practices. With the right nutritional strategies, you can maintain optimal body composition and enhance training and tournament performance.
