A child with an eczema flare-up on their arm

Eczema in children is very common but how can parents help? Here are a few tips on how to deal with eczema in children and how to keep flare-ups to a minimal.

Medicated Lotions

The chances are you will need to visit your GP to discuss your child’s skincare if they suffer from eczema. My eldest has eczema and as good as some of the over the counter products are, he needs something a little stronger when he gets a breakout.
We find using Dermol helps to keep his skin moisturised. It really is fab as you can also use it as a soap to wash with when in the bath.  If his eczema flairs up in a big way then we apply a small amount of prescribed steroid cream which clears it up almost instantly.
The GP or dermatologist can help create a skincare plan that is suitable for your child.

ScratchSleeves

Some materials can be a real irritant to eczema-prone skin. You can purchase specialised clothing that is kind to the skin, such as pyjamas with outer seams, tops with a wide neck opening to prevent chaffing on the skin and even Scratch Sleeves to prevent little ones from scratching their skin and making it sore.
With a little browsing online, there are quite a few products like these to discover.

Maintaining A Constant Temperature

Try to make sure your child does not overheat as getting too hot can aggravate eczema. Provide loose clothing so the air can flow freely and the child’s skin can breathe. Fabric such as cotton is more favourable as polyester and wool could cause irritation which in turn, could possibly lead to another flare-up.
