There are people moving for new job opportunities all the time. Others are looking for an out-of-state move to improve their quality of life. The US is so big that it is quite a challenge to be able to handle a move to another state. It isn’t as easy as moving to another town nearby.
Getting your stuff moved to another state is no easy feat. It takes a lot of coordination for the timing to work out in your favor. The more prepared you are, then the better your chances are for the move to go without any issues. In this article, we will go over what it takes to move to another state.
1 – Hire a mover or DIY?
There are two options when it comes to moving across the country. You can hire a moving company to pack your boxes and furniture and meet you at your new home at a designated date and time. This takes quite a bit of coordination to make sure that you don’t arrive first and are faced with an empty house. Or, that you arrive after they do and they can’t deliver your stuff.
This can be avoided by using a container moving company in which they give you a container to fill at your old home. They then pick up the container and drop it off at your new house. You don’t have to be there for that since it is locked. They will pick it up once you’ve emptied it out.
It’s also a possibility to hire a truck and load it and drive it yourself. This is a lot of work and can be exhausting. Not only are you doing back-breaking work, but driving a big truck for thousands of miles is not easy. You’ll also have to hire a car shipping company to get your car to your destination.
There is no right or wrong way to go about this, it all comes down to budget and time. If you have the budget but not the time then hire a moving company. If you have the time but not the budget then do it yourself.
2 – Set up utilities early
Ideally, you will want to arrive at your new home and already have gas, electricity, and internet. The best thing to do is to make sure that you take care of things well before the move.
Call your providers and tell them the date that you’re expecting to move in and that you need the utilities to be switched before you arrive. The earlier you make this call the better since it isn’t always a simple process.
This is because you may have to cancel with your current provider and sign up with a new one. Very often utilities are different in different states so you may not be able to stay with your current one. Give the process time so you don’t get a surprise when you arrive.
