We love wooden floors in our home. They are so practical, easy to clean, hardwearing and fade resistant in the sun. The only problem with wooden flooring is that historically wooden floors have always been cold in the winter. When you have a cold room, carpet is the logical choice, but is it the right one? Here we have compiled a list of ways that can help keep your home cosy even with wooden floors.
Get A Great Rug
Rugs are available in such a huge variety of colours and styles nowadays, there really is something for everyone. You can have a lovely thick rug that you place down in the winter giving you the insulation benefits of carpet with the practicality of wooden flooring.

Underfloor Heating
Underfloor heating used to be reserved for millionaires mansions. There have been massive developments in technology now though and you can have underfloor heating installed beneath your wooden flooring. This not only removes the cool feeling from the floor, but it also heats the room and reduces your overall heating costs. You don’t need expensive real wood flooring to appreciate underfloor heating either, many brands of Laminate Flooring are also suitable for underfloor heating.
Underlay
There are a huge variety of underlays for wooden flooring. Each type has different benefits. Some are best for uneven floors, some insulate against noise and others help retain heat and insulate against the cold. If keeping warm is high on your agenda, make sure that you chose the correct underlay.
Wooden flooring is not actually cold, it is simply a good conductor of heat. If the room is cold, and more specifically, if the subflooring is cold then the laminate will feel cold. You could use cork or plywood beneath your flooring prior to laying to help insulate the cold concrete floor and keep your wooden flooring toasty.
Do you have wooden floors?
Would adore under floor heating – maybe one day
I am a recent convert to wooden flooring due to pets in the home and I love it. I had no idea that I could have installed underfloor heating so will be keeping that in mind for next time. Thank you.
I have laminate in quite a few rooms which are cold to walk on. But I find them more practical and easier to clean. But I’ve noticed that when I walk on my friend’s wooden floor it isn’t cold. I’m definitely going to have wood instead of laminate when I move house
