Child sleeping. Transition from cot to bed.

The transition of a child moving from a cot to a bed differs from family to family. Don’t feel pressured to keep up with other children’s transitions, every child is unique and ready at different times. You will know when the time is right to introduce your little one to a big bed so go with your own instincts.
Having two children, we have made this transition twice now, so I thought I would share a few tips on what we felt made our transition from cot to bed easier.

Let Your Little One Choose Their Bedding

Make the transition from cot to bed exciting by letting them choose their own bedding. Not only are you giving them a chance to be independent, a brand new bed set with their favourite character on will leave them more than excited for bedtime and they won’t be able to wait to dive in!

Buy A Toddler Bed

We found a toddler bed was far more suitable for when our boys moved from cot to bed. A toddler bed is a lot lower than your standard single, making it an ideal height for little ones to get in and out of bed.

Put A Guard In Place

Both of my boys are wrigglers, so the first thing I did was buy a guard that I could attach to the side of the bed. It’s perfect for the first few weeks until they come accustomised to their new bed and it still gives that comfort that they were used to from having cot sides to make them feel secure.

Familiarity

Be sure to keep favourite teddies, comfort blankets to hand for bedtimes. Having something familiar close by will help comfort little ones as they settle down for the night in their new bed. Also stick to bedtime routines – bed, bathtime, storytime. Keeping things familiar will help massively.

We have partnered up with Happy Beds to bring these tips to you today. I hope they help make your transition a smooth one!

Do you have any tips? Perhaps you are planning on moving your child to a big bed soon.

  1. It seems such a long time since my girls moved into their own beds.
Letting them choose their own bedding really helped and they both had bed guards.
I think as long as they feel safe and secure the change can be quite easy x
