Being environmentally conscious is in all of our futures, so raise your child in the best way to arm them with the tools to protect our planet. We have teamed up with a prep school in Buckinghamshire to bring you some fab tips on how to encourage your child to be super earth-friendly!
Show them how to save energy in the home
There are ways to show them how to save energy in the home by showing them where they can conserve energy. As they’ll be spending most of their time at home, it can be a good way of showing where you’re saving energy and what can be done to change areas of the home.
Examples include telling your child to turn off lights when rooms are not in use, changing bulbs to LED lights and the different flushing motions for when they’re using the toilet.
Volunteering
A great way to show your child how to be environmentally conscious is by encouraging them to join in with eco-friendly activities. Join them in these activities by letting them take part in litter picking, plastic waste collection and river monitoring.
There are lots of initiatives children can get involved in both in school and with their parents – a lot of environment and wildlife organisations have ways children can be involved in their daily work.
Encourage Greenfingers
Get the children involved in the garden and learn them to grow their own vegetables. Teach the importance of water butts and discuss the benefits of organic produce.
You could also build homes for wildlife, plant flowers that will encourage bees, compost waste from the home and so much more!
Encourage walking to school
Although not always possible of course, if you do live locally you could motivate your child to walk to school. You could both walk together to school to show them the best route to school, or they could take a bike to school if there’s a suitable place for them to lock it up.
Not only does this benefit the environment with less carbon dioxide fumes, they’re also remaining active on their walk or cycle to school. The great outdoors can give them a new perspective on how the environment works and how it’s our greatest gift.
Involve the children with the recycling
Let the kids help with the recycling chores. Being sustainable plays a big part in our future, so it makes sense to educate our children on how to be responsible when it comes to saving our planet.
Mark bins with words or images so little ones can identify what bin the rubbish needs to go in.
We have a bag for life where we put all of our card and paper before we take it outside to empty it into the recycling bags. My youngest feels super helpful every time he deposits a bit of scrap paper or cardboard into there. He does a great job!

These are all such great tips for helping to raise our children to be environmentally conscious. We have water butts in the garden that Sophie uses if she wants to water the plants and she likes to get involved with gardening. We’ll probably be joining in with a litter pick at some point this month for #30DaysWild and we’re fortunate enough to live near to our school so always walk to school. #MMBC
We are lucky enough to live a walking distance from school. School is very good at teaching recycling, gardening (the children are about to sell the produce they have grown to raise some money for the school). We have our own little veg patch at home which the children enjoy watering.
Lovely ideas I can try with my 4 year old. He is loving nature at the moment.
We recycle, walk when we can and I now go to the market on my bike instead of by car. June 5th was World Environment Day and I wrote a blogpost about picture book characters that can inspire children to find different ways to look after their environment.
