Winters are getting colder and it can put your family at risk, especially if you have young children or elderly parents in your home. Taking time to prepare your family, mentally and physically, is crucial for their comfort, health and safety. When you take proactive steps, you can reduce any risks that are associated with the winter months and craft more enjoyable seasons. You can also help to prevent illness and mental health conditions from worsening.

There are many things you can do to prepare your home for winter, including warm clothes, innovative heated socks, a warm home, education, fueling your body and doing positive things for your mental health. To help you on your journey, here are some top things you can do to prepare your family for the cold winter months.

Invest in warm clothes

Warm clothes are going to give you and your family a good foundation to start from. When you all have access to warm clothing, you are able to go anywhere and you will be okay. This could be in the house or out shopping.

Invest in items like coats and jumpers, so you can layer up and down depending on the temperature. If you have a baby, then you may also consider a 2.5 tog sleeping bag to keep them warmer in the evenings and at night time when the temperature drops. A baby will not be able to make decisions like older children or adults, so it is important that you take extra steps for them.

Make your home warm

Take measures around your home to make it warmer. You might start with a little assessment, so you can see if any issues need resolving first, such as broken windows and cold air throughout the home. Make sure you have proper and up-to-date insulation in your home, and that your heating works properly. You may invest in a thermostat so you can regulate the temperature in your home and keep it consistently warm. Leave extra blankets around your home for your family to use when they wish. You may also consider bigger updates such as wooden floors.

Educate your family

Educating your family can help them understand the risks of the cold months and make more informed decisions. This is great for growing children so they can begin to adopt some autonomy and learn for themselves. Talk to them about how to warm up in the cold, why the cold can be dangerous, and fire safety.

Fuel your body

Fueling your body throughout the winter months is really key. Without the sun and spending time out in nature as you would in the summer, the body begins to lack important vitamins such as vitamin D. Mental health can worsen during the winter, and there is an increased risk of catching an illness. Food can be a great source of fuel for your body and support your immune system. It can be great to cook up some big soups or stews that contain lots of seasonal vegetables to support your body naturally.

Winter can be a challenge for your family. Take these important steps to prepare you as much as possible.
