We use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in a lot of our homeschooling sessions. Our recent activities that have implemented STEM in some way are growing crystals, building our own volcano and studying geodes. Recently we were introduced to the fab collection of My STEM Day books from Carlton Kids Books and we couldn’t wait to get stuck in!
The My STEM Day books reflect on how Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are part of our everyday lives from the moment we get up to the time we go to bed. With lots of cool facts to discover, puzzles to complete and so many awesome and simple to do experiments to carry out, children will find learning super fun.

Most of the experiments in the books are easy to set up, take only a short amount of time and most importantly are a great way to learn. One of our favourite things about this series of books is that you don’t need loads of specialist equipment or ingredients to be able to take part. The majority of these projects can be completed using everyday household items. Each experiment also has a helpful checklist for all of the things you will need to have to hand before you start.
We have been learning about water recently, where our drinking water comes from, how it is cleaned, stored and then distributed. We found a project in the engineering book that explains how the plumbing in our home works using gravity.

All we needed was an empty plastic bottle, a dart (or something pointy and sharp), a marker, a ruler and some tape. We marked the bottle at 5cm intervals, pierced the marks, sealed the holes with tape and filled the bottle with water. By quickly removing the tape, the water came out of the hole at the bottom with more force than the holes at the top. This is due to the amount of pressure caused by the weight of the water.

All of the books have great projects based on everyday things like traffic lights, bridges, roads and gears. The books are beautifully illustrated and written so that kids grasp the subject matter with ease and look forward to the next activity.
We love the My STEM Day collection and they get the big thumbs up from us!
