We have always been on top of our eyesight examinations. My eldest had a lazy eye from a young age and, fortunately, with help from the ophthalmologists at the hospital and the optometrist at our opticians has been able to correct it through wearing glasses. My husband also has to have regular check-ups because of his medications so we are all regular visitors to our opticians and keeping on top of our eye care.
It really is surprising what can be picked up through an eye test. Did you know that dementia, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease arthritis and even tumours can be detected at your eye examination?
Obviously they also check your vision and see if you have any signs of cataracts or macular degeneration but perhaps the most important part of an eye examination, is the test for glaucoma.
Glaucoma is a group of diseases that attack the optical nerve. Many people are at risk of glaucoma, my husband is susceptible to secondary glaucoma because of the long term steroids he has to take. You are also known to be at an increased risk if the disease runs in your family, however, on many occasions, it comes as a complete surprise to the patient. Many people diagnosed with having glaucoma have no symptoms at all and the only way the disease is discovered is through the patient’s eye test.
In its more advanced form, it can cause loss of sight. In fact, one in ten blind registrations in the U.K. is attributed to glaucoma.
There are currently nearly half a million sufferers in the U.K. alone with glaucoma and that number is expected to rise to over three million by 2050. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for glaucoma and that is what makes early diagnosis so important as it gives us all so many more options to manage the symptoms caused by the disease.
