Helping your child with their homework 1

*This is a collaborative post.

It isn’t always easy to keep track of your child’s progress at school but the one thing you can get involved with is their homework. Here are a few of the ways you can help your child get their homework done efficiently.

Time management matters

The first step to ensuring your child is getting their homework done on time is making sure they have an opportunity to start. It can be easy for students to become distracted with hobbies, socialising and after school activities and time can slip away from them. To fix this, you can set a certain time frame for them to do their homework so that they stay on track. Create a visual timetable and keep it in a spot they can see it.

Create a Workspace

If your child doesn’t have a dedicated space where they are able to work efficiently and comfortably, they will be less likely to complete any work they must do. Giving them a desk or table in an unchanging space will help students get into ‘work mode’ and they will more likely complete tasks on time and to a high standard. Buying them cheap laptops to work from will also stop them from having to wait until the family computer is available to use.

Communication comes first

If your child feels that you’re too busy to approach with questions or concerns regarding their homework, they may avoid doing so. Communicate with them and let them know that you are available to them if they are worried about anything. A good place to begin is simply asking them what the task is and give them an opportunity to discuss any areas which may be challenging for them. Set aside a special time every day; let your child know that this time is theirs and theirs alone.

Healthy body – healthy mind

When students get to a certain age, it can be easy for them to neglect self-care. You can help your child by ensuring that they get enough sleep and that they’re well hydrated. Teaching them the importance of this is crucial because a child who is tired or dehydrated won’t manage tasks well.

And finally

Ambition is a big part of learning and it’s one which cannot be ignored Show your child that ambition is a good thing – that it is important to set goals for oneself and to work hard to achieve them. This sixth form college in London has this idea at the core of all they do.

The earlier you begin teaching your child the good habits which will travel with them throughout their studies, the better their chances at success. Even toddlers can understand the need for quiet time and enjoy the benefits of a special place in which to read and learn.
