The Intruders book review

Cass and James, a young couple eager to save for their own home, seize the opportunity to house-sit at Newington House, a manor abandoned for nearly thirty years following a tragic home invasion. What begins as a promising arrangement soon turns sinister as objects vanish, timepieces halt at the same hour, and an oppressive atmosphere pervades the house. As unsettling occurrences escalate, Cass and James begin to question their safety and the house’s dark past.

The Intruders By Louise Jensen Review

Newington House has a pretty dark history and honestly, you can feel the creepiness seeping off the pages. The house is basically a character in itself, with stuff mysteriously shifting around, windows left wide open for no reason, and the most creepiest, a grandfather clock that stops at the same time every night. I was literally on the edge of my seat, especially when strange music and chilling messages start showing up. I don’t think I could have stayed in that house for even one night.

The way Jensen slowly unpacks the mystery of Newington House through flashbacks was quite clever. I thought I had a good grip on what had happened there, but every time I thought I was one step ahead, the story would throw a curveball. There’s so many little things that kept me guessing. By the end, I was so invested in finding out how Cass and James fit into the bigger picture.

The pacing is perfect too, those short chapters had me racing through the book, desperate for the next reveal. Plus, I loved how Jensen introduced different character perspectives one by one, so it never felt like too much at once. By the time those extra voices came in, I was wanting to fill in the blanks about what happened on that tragic night. It just kept me turning the pages faster and faster, right to the end!

If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers that play with your mind, this is definitely one to pick up! It’ll keep you guessing and on edge and you won’t be able to put it down.

I really enjoyed this and will be looking out for more titles from this author.
