Planning A Holiday In Sri Lanka

After a very busy year with work, I think it’s about time we started to plan our next holiday. In fact, we have a few destinations that we would like to visit. I recently shared how much we would love to take a holiday in Canada, taste the local delights in Italy and indulge in a spot of sightseeing in Sri Lanka.

Getting organised for a family holiday is a job all on its own though! There is so much to prepare isn’t there? I’ve been doing research prior to booking up a holiday in Sri Lanka. There is so much to see and do that I don’t want to miss anything out!  The accommodation is one of the most important factors that we consider. I have been looking at Sri Lanka villas as we much prefer self-catering. I love the luxury of a private pool and having that sense of freedom that you get with a villa.

We also love to see the sights whilst visiting a different part of the world and here are just a few locations we would like to visit.

Nuwara Eliya

Known as Little England Nuwara Eliya boasts the most dramatic views with lush shades of greens from the terraced tea plantations. Such the perfect opportunity to get the DSLR out and capture some stunning scenery.
I also like the train journey that can be taken from Nuwara Eliya to Ella. Those breathtaking views will stay with us forever! I know my boys would really enjoy this too.

Polonnaruwa

We are all history buffs in our house so to visit Polonnaruwa which is enriched with history with its old ruins and temples, it’s an idyllic place for us to explore.
The Royal Palace is just one of the many ruins we would love to see in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. These ruins date back to King Parakramabahu I 1153 – 1186. There is also the audience hall, the sacred quadrangle and many more impressive structures.

Mirissa

Sri Lanka’s coastline has the most beautiful beaches and Mirissa beach looks so amazing! Palm trees gently swaying in the sea breeze, golden sands and crystal clear waters. Utterly bliss!
Not forgetting whale and dolphin watching of course. It’s such a treat to see animals in their own environment and apparently, should you go in the right season you are guaranteed to see these wonderful creatures swim by whilst you watch in awe from the boat.

Colombo

Visiting the capital of Sri Lanka is a must whilst there. Although I am not a fan of the hustle of bustle that cities bring, I have heard so many good things about Colomba that I would just have to go and experience it for myself.
Checking out the cuisine at the locals’ stalls, admiring souvenir shops and perhaps joining in on a walking tour.

Yala National Park

Bordering the Indian Ocean, Yala National Park is home to wildlife such as elephants, crocodiles, leopards, wild birds and more. The park covers 979 square kilometres and is broken up into blocks. two of which are open to the public. I like that a huge proportion of the park is out of bounds to visitors as it allows the animals to have a more natural environment. To go on a safari and see these amazing animals close up would be a fantastic experience.
