I picked up Mysteries Of The Other Side expecting a spiritual read, as this has always interested me, but what I got was something altogether deeper. George Begg doesn’t just tell a story about faith or beliefs; he opens a door. The book begins with a stark contrast: the author’s former life as a sceptic and fighter pilot, and the life-changing encounter that forced him to question everything he thought he knew.
A little about the author
George Begg was born in Scotland in 1956 and moved to England at the age of four. Educated in Surrey, he joined the RAF cadets at school and learned to fly at seventeen, sparking a lifelong passion for aviation. Sponsored by the RAF, he studied Biology at the University of Southampton before serving as a flying instructor and fighter pilot during the Cold War.
After leaving the service, George built a career as a self-employed businessman and entrepreneur, navigating both success and adversity. A lifelong sceptic and staunch non-believer, his life changed dramatically when God appeared to him as a bright white light—an experience that transformed his worldview and revealed a new purpose.
Since that moment, George has dedicated his life to uncovering the mysteries hidden in Scripture, guided by divine inspiration. Mysteries of the Other Side: Book 1 – The Hidden Story marks the beginning of a thought-provoking series that explores faith, the afterlife, and humanity’s search for truth.

What grabbed me
- Voice and honesty – Begg writes with a raw honesty that feels refreshing, especially when he shares his past scepticism and how unsettling the transformation was. The shift from “rational pilot” to “man grappling with the divine” comes across as real, grounded, and genuinely human.
- Big questions, gently asked – This isn’t preachy or heavy-handed. Instead, the book poses quiet but profound questions: What lies beyond our daily life? Is there meaning behind chaos? What if there’s more to existence than meets the eye? In a world that often feels jaded and cynical, that’s a rare thing.
- Bridging faith, science, and real life – Begg doesn’t shy away from the tension between belief and rationality. His background gives him an anchor in the “real world,” and that makes his spiritual revelations feel accessible even to those who might doubt.
A few thoughts
- This book asks for reflection, sometimes for revisiting beliefs and comfort zones. If you’re after easy escapism, this might feel heavy.
- Some of the leaps from sceptic to believer are steep, those who demand empirical evidence might struggle. The book asks for openness rather than certainty.

This sounds intriguing and nothing like my usual psychological thriller or police procedural.
