Cost of living

As the cost of living continues to rise across the UK, many families are seeking effective ways to reduce household expenses while maintaining a good standard of living. MoneyPlus Advice recently worked on an interesting campaign, featuring increases in the cost of living over a ten year period from 2014-2024.
It covers increases such as prices of food, petrol and the average age of a first-time buyer and how they all impact the UK public.

Here are some statistics from MoneyPlus Advice that show just how prices of everyday groceries have risen.

ItemCost in 2024Cost in 2015
2 pints milk£1.20£0.80
250g unsalted butter£1.99£1.24
280g basmati rice£0.99£0.82
600g beef mince£4.79£3.96
1kg chicken breast£6.49£5.47
500ml olive oil£4.49£1.52
12 eggs£2.35£1.86
400g sliced ham£2.39£1.59
6 pack of apples£1.19£1.07
400g cheddar cheese£2.69£2.46

In addition to food items, they also looked at rises in average household debt (including mortgages) and the average house price for first-time buyers.

  • Average household debt in 2014 – £54,546
  • Average household debt in 2024 – £65,143
  • Average house price for first-time buyers 2014 – £192,000
  • Average house price for first-time buyers 2024 – £235,851

The prices of houses have gone through the roof. It’s no wonder that first-time buyers struggle to get on the property ladder.

Increasing expenses can frequently impact your way of life, requiring you to adjust your budget to stay afloat.
According to the survey, 36.90% of respondents said they frequently had to cut back on non-essential spending such as entertainment, travel and leisure.
Overall, 90.20% said that they had been impacted by the cost of living.

By making some adjustments to spending habits, it is possible to ease financial pressures without compromising on comfort. Here are just a few tips …

1. Review Your Household Budget

A thorough review of income and outgoings is the first step towards financial efficiency. Regularly monitoring spending helps to identify areas where savings can be made. Budgeting tools and apps can assist in tracking expenses, setting financial goals, and prioritising essential outgoings.

2. Reduce Energy Consumption

Energy bills constitute a significant portion of household costs. Implementing the following measures can help to lower these expenses:

  • Lower the thermostat – Reducing the temperature by just 1°C can decrease heating bills by up to 10%.
  • Improve home insulation – Sealing draughts around windows and doors can prevent heat loss, potentially saving between £80 and £95 annually.
  • Use energy-efficient appliances – Investing in A-rated energy-efficient appliances can lead to long-term savings on electricity bills.

3. Assess Subscription Services

Subscription services, such as streaming platforms and memberships, can add up significantly over time. Reviewing these regularly and cancelling any that are rarely used can free up funds for more essential expenses.

4. Reduce Grocery Expenditure

Food shopping is a necessity, but careful planning can help to lower costs:

  • Start meal planning to avoid impulse purchases and food waste.
  • Buy in bulk for non-perishable items where discounts apply.
  • Opt for more supermarket own-brand products, which are often more affordable while maintaining similar quality to branded goods.

5. Save on Transport Costs

With fuel prices remaining high, families can benefit from reconsidering their transport arrangements:

  • Use public transport where possible to save on fuel, parking, and maintenance expenses.
  • Car share for regular journeys to split travel costs with friends, colleagues, or family members.
  • Consider cycling or walking for shorter distances to reduce commuting expenses while keeping fit.

6. Take Advantage of Discounts and Cashback Schemes

Many retailers offer discounts, loyalty schemes and cashback opportunities, which can contribute to significant savings over time. Using cashback credit cards responsibly and signing up for reward programmes can help reduce costs on regular purchases.
I have used TopCashback for along as I can remember and have had some fab payouts over the years. You can sign up here and get £10 for using my referal link.

7. Lower Water Bills

Water conservation benefits both the environment and household finances. Here are some useful tips –

  • Fixing leaks promptly to avoid unnecessary water wastage.
  • Installing water-efficient fixtures such as low-flow showerheads and dual-flush toilets.
  • Using appliances efficiently, for example, running dishwashers and washing machines only when full.

8. Compare Insurance and Utility Providers

Regularly reviewing insurance policies (home, car, life) and comparing them with other providers ensures that you are receiving the best deal. Similarly, switching energy, broadband and mobile providers when better rates become available can result in considerable long-term savings.

How do you cope with the current cost of living? Perhaps you have some tips to share.

  1. Great ideas – we do deserve some treats regardless of how stretched our finances are

  2. I really should start meal planning , our grocery bills seem to get bigger every time I go. I buy own brand for my cleaning supplies & always try to buy the cheapest food per kilo where possible.

  3. We are having so many of the same problems here– especially with housing prices having gone through the roof. Though we don’t really have any other options for utility providers but we are lucky that we have well water and therefor no water bills (though our pump is electric so that adds a bit to our electric bill).

  4. Brilliant advice, small simple changes really do add up.
The rising grocery prices are frustrating me the most at the moment and every single bill seems to have gone up in price too this month.

  5. I make sure I make a shopping list now, and only buy what is on it when I shop. It has made it a lot quicker and has stopped me making impulse buys!
