How To Create a Relaxing Outside Space | AD

A pergola at the end of a garden surrounded by evergreens with latice side panels and a huge hanging basket full of purple. pink and white flowers. There is a cast iron tables and chair set underneath.

The garden is an extension to the home so making the very most of the space makes complete sense. It should be a haven, somewhere to relax, kick back and put your feet up. Regardless of whether you have a small terrace or a spacious country garden, having somewhere to decompress and be in nature, will be beneficial to both your wellbeing and mental health.
Here are some simple ways of how you can create your very own relaxing outside space.

Privacy

There is no use creating a relaxing haven if you are on show to every Tom, Dick and Harry! Thankfully there is a multitude of ways in which you can create privacy in your garden.

  • Hedges – Fast growing hedges include Bay Laurel, Privet, Bamboo, Leylandii and Red Robin.
  • Trellis – Trellis is a fantastic and efficient way to create privacy in your outdoor space. You could buy full height squared trellis panels to make a fence or simply screw some shorter panels on top of your existing walls.
  • Privacy screens – These are perfect for screening off areas where you may have a hot tub or you want to seclude an area for sunbathing.
  • A pergola – Pergolas are ideal to bring instant privacy to a seating area. Add drapes, screens or lattice work to make the area more secluded.
  • Summer House – Depending how big your garden is, a summer house is a fab retreat where you can hide away and enjoy the view of your garden without being overlooked.

Comfortable furniture

Comfortable garden furniture is a must if you want to create a relaxing space to sit in. We are not talking deck chairs here! I am talking about luxury rattan furniture that is like sitting on a cloud. The depth of deep filled cushions as you sit down to enjoy a good book, or the super comfy communal sofa that the whole family can congregate on.
It is certainly worth investing a little more when it comes to buying garden furniture, it will be more durable, last much longer and make you want to spend even more time outside, which is always a good thing.

Add a water feature

There is nothing more relaxing than listening to the steady burble of running water. It is just so soothing. Water features not only make a fabulous focal point, but they also have calming qualities. Water features will bring a sense of zen to any area of the garden.
You can choose from a wide variety of designs or if you are feeling creative, you could have a go at making your own.

Plant scented flowers

As a keen gardener, I love nothing more than to plant fragrant plants in my garden. Being met by the different aromas really changes the mood.
Plants like lilac and roses and scented geraniums have a very strong scent and smell absolutely amazing when in bloom.

Ambient lighting

Introducing outdoor lighting to your garden such as fairy lights or festoon lights can bring a relaxing atmosphere to the space. Use them to dress pergolas, trees or to light up your parasol. The gentle glow will make it super inviting for friends and family to get together and enjoy the evening ahead.

  1. I have wanted to get privacy screens for ages as our garden is quite open but they are just so expensive. Such a great idea though.

  2. With the new fence going up last year and staying up during the storms I am looking forward to the warmer weather when we can enjoy our garden with some privacy. I am fancying some comfy garden furniture instead of the plastic chairs and table. We will have to see what comes up in the local auction x

  3. I love planting strongly scented flowers in my garden. Hyacinths smell wonderful in the spring and sweet peas smell wonderful in the summer, especially planted in a pot by the back door. They’re really easy to plant from seed too :o)
