A good relationship with your child’s teachers is essential to your child’s academic success. The more information shared between parents and teachers, the more your child will benefit.
Here is some great advice from an independent girl’s school in Surrey on how you can build a successful relationship with your child’s teachers…
Attendance & punctuality
Keeping up your child’s attendance and punctuality will not only give the teacher a good impression, but it will also show that you value your child’s education and appreciate all of the teacher’s hard work. Furthermore, time management is an important life-skill for your child to learn.
Parents Evening
Parent Evenings are one of the few opportunities parents get to communicate with school teachers. Parents can find out how well their children are progressing at school and teachers can give advice on supporting learning at home. These events are vital to your child’s development and should not be missed. Use this valuable time to get to know your child’s teacher and discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s learning.
After school
If you would like to talk privately to your child’s teacher and you cannot wait until parents evening, it is important to find a suitable time. Parents often try to speak to teachers in the morning, when they drop their child into class. However, this isn’t always the best time for teachers. They will be busy getting their class organised for the day ahead. Instead, it is best to wait until the end of the day, when the children have left, or arrange an appointment with the school office.
Appreciation
A simple ‘thank you’ will go a very long way in building a relationship with your child’s teachers. By letting a teacher know that your child enjoyed a particular lesson, you will be giving the teacher valuable feedback. Better still, encourage your child to tell them! You could also arrange thank you gifts at the end of term to show each teacher how much they are appreciated.
