Staying focused while studying can be a real challenge, especially when juggling multiple responsibilities. I’m currently pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing whilst working from home and homeschooling my boys! To be totally honest, I sometimes wonder how I’m going to get everything done.
Thankfully, I have few concentration hacks that help me keep my mind focused while studying.
1. Create a Dedicated Study Space
Having a dedicated study space is crucial. This space should be free from distractions and solely for studying. For me, this means finding a quiet place where I can immerse myself in my creative writing (normally in the garden or at my desk). It’s also important to let family members know that this is your study time and space, so they can support you by minimising interruptions.
2. Set Specific Goals
Setting specific goals can transform your study sessions. Breaking down your workload into manageable tasks helps maintain focus and gives a sense of accomplishment. For instance, if I’m working on a chapter for my creative writing thesis, I might set a goal to write 500 words or revise a section within an hour. This approach not only keeps me focused but also makes large projects feel less daunting.
3. Take Regular Breaks
I can’t emphasise enough, the importance of taking regular breaks to maintain focus. Taking a breather helps prevent burnout and keeps your mind fresh. When homeschooling my boys, I apply this technique, especially with my youngest as he is autistic and can lose focus easily!
Time blocking makes study time more productive for everyone.
4. Stay Hydrated and Eat Healthily
Nutrition plays a significant role in maintaining focus. Staying hydrated and eating healthy snacks can keep your energy levels stable throughout the day. I always keep a water bottle and some fruit at my desk. This habit ensures that I don’t get distracted by hunger and helps me maintain my concentration.
5. Minimise Distractions
Minimising distractions is easier said than done, especially with kids around. However, setting boundaries can help. When I’m in my study zone, I put my phone on silent and my husband will play with the kids away from where I’m studying.
Using apps that block social media during study hours can also be beneficial. This practice ensures that my study time is as efficient as possible and I don’t fall down the trap of social scrolling!
6. Use Study Aids
Utilising study aids like flashcards, summaries, and mind maps can make studying more effective. For creative writing, I often use visual aids like storyboards or character maps. These tools help organise my thoughts and keep me engaged with my work. Additionally, using apps and online resources can provide new perspectives and keep the learning process dynamic.
7. Get Enough Sleep
Adequate rest is essential for maintaining focus and cognitive function. Balancing work, study, and homeschooling can be exhausting, but prioritising sleep is crucial. I make sure to stick to a regular sleep schedule, which helps me stay alert and productive throughout the day. I am totally useless without a good night’s sleep, so this I do try to adhere to (as long as my youngest doesn’t have other ideas).
What helps you to concentrate?
I find I work best first thing in the morning as by the evening I struggle to fully concentrate. I so admire how you are managing to do your Masters degree and home school!
Great advice – need all the help I can get
Mornings are my best – all depends on the task
Mornings are best for me ! Evenings I have no concentration
I also wonder how you get everything done, Jayne! You’ve obviously mastered the techniques for maintaining concentration when you’re studying.
Making sure that I have everything that I need to hand to complete the task for the day helps me as I find that getting up to grab a pen or a coffee etc breaks my concentration completely.
