Their organs process substances differently and their bodies are more sensitive to certain ingredients, which means the right dosage often depends on their age and weight. Because of these factors, kids require medicines that are specifically formulated for them and not just smaller doses of what adults take.

Age Affects How the Body Processes Medicine

One of the key reasons kids and adults require different medications is due to how the body processes medicine. Specifically, it’s a process that involves absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination. These determine how quickly and effectively a drug works, and they vary significantly between children and adults. In adults, the organs responsible for processing medicine, such as the liver and kidneys, are fully developed. This means they are better equipped to break down and filter out active ingredients.

In contrast, infants and young children have immature organ systems. Their liver enzymes may not yet be efficient at metabolizing certain compounds, while their kidneys might not be fully capable of excreting waste products. As a result, medicines can stay in a child’s system much longer than intended, increasing the risk of overdose or side effects. The way medicine is absorbed and distributed in the body also differs due to factors like body water content, fat composition, and underdeveloped immune responses.

For example, ambroxol, a common mucolytic used to treat cough with phlegm, is widely available in Philippine pharmacies in both pediatric and adult forms. However, medicine labelled “ambroxol for baby” has a much lower dosage and gentler concentration. Giving a baby the adult version, even in a smaller amount, could lead to an excessive dose that their system is not ready to handle. This highlights why the right formulation and dosage, tailored to a child’s age and development, is critical. 

Dosage Differences Are Not Just About Size

Another common misconception about adult and children’s medicine is that you can simply adjust an adult dose by body weight to make it suitable for children. However, pediatric dosing involves more than just reducing the quantity. Dosages for children are calculated based on their age, weight, and sometimes body surface area because their bodies process drugs differently than adults. For example, a medication that requires metabolism in the liver may accumulate to toxic levels in a child if their liver function is not mature enough. If you give too little of a medicine, it may render it ineffective, while giving too much can lead to harmful effects. This is especially dangerous with antibiotics, fever reducers like paracetamol or ibuprofen, or medications for asthma and allergies.

Medicines for children are also different in form. Pediatric medications often come as syrups, suspensions, chewable tablets, or drops. These are designed to make administration easier and help ensure that the medicine is absorbed properly and safely. The flavors and liquid forms help encourage compliance, especially among younger kids who may resist swallowing bitter pills or capsules.

In contrast, adult medications are typically available in higher concentrations and in forms like tablets, capsules, or extended-release formulations that are meant to be digested slowly over time. These can be dangerous for children, even in small amounts.

Side Effects and Reactions Can Vary

Children and adults can also experience different side effects from the same medication. This is due to differences in how their bodies react to active ingredients and their varying levels of sensitivity. For instance, while antihistamines like diphenhydramine may cause drowsiness in adults, they can cause hyperactivity or irritability in children. Similarly, some pain relievers like aspirin, which are commonly used by adults, are not recommended for children due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome, a rare but serious condition that can affect the liver and brain.

These variations in reaction are part of the reason why certain medicines are tested separately for pediatric use. Regulatory agencies such as the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) require specific studies and labeling before a medication can be approved for children. If the medicine hasn’t been tested for pediatric safety, it can put your child at risk of unexpected and harmful side effects.

Choosing the right medication for a child involves understanding how their developing body reacts to medicine differently from an adult’s. From how drugs are absorbed and processed to how they’re formulated and dosed, children require treatments specifically tailored to their age and needs.

For Parents and caregivers, being mindful of these differences can help prevent complications and support a child’s recovery more effectively. Always consult a paediatrician or healthcare provider before giving any medicine to a child, even for common illnesses. Remember, using age-appropriate medications and following professional guidance protects your child’s health and well-being in the long run.
